  • I've just fixed a friends machine, after searching all over the net and trying umpteen things it turned out a simple ipconfig/renewdns was all that was needed

The new Microsoft service is going to hopefully be a help with problems like that .

Further to the "why don't people follow instructions and use security software properly and then wonder why they have problems" debate, while I was finishing off #2 earlier, I got a call from another person I'd sorted out previously. They'd never updated mbam, ccleaner or glary ever, never used them, downloaded stopzilla amongst other things, and were calling me to go and have a look...needless to say it was full of carp

It really does not help that -- from the ground up re how/what pupils are taught -- most ICT teachers are completely and utterly incompetent in their vocation. They really do not have a clue -- pretend otherwise
  • I would like to suggest Virus Bulletin as a useful source of current information regarding the latest threats.

Additionally - I've used Rootkit Revealer with some success in the past. It can be downloaded via the Microsoft 'Technet' website.

The Ultimate Boot CD is also a very useful piece of kit when you need a bootable software tool.

Personally I long for the day when 'cloud' computing becomes the 'norm' for the average user and all they have to do is switch it on.

Unfortunately I cannot post links so just Google the items suggested.
