Menus and Hovering

1. Menus - Am forever telling people to come to this amazing site. But I am a bit of a freak and do worry that they will not know where to go on first visit. I say "go to articles on left". So, my question is why is there a articles and guides button. They appear to have the same things in them, and IMO may confuse new users.
2. Hovering. Would it be possible to not have a time out when hovering over a thread, I like to see what the gist is and then go in if I choose.
Just some ideas to muse over, I am not complaining.
