I am using Virgin Net for broadband I am supposed to be getting 5.5 Meg. but I am only getting 400-800 Kbs.
Has anyone else got the same problem with slow speeds etc?

You can logon to the bt test domain (change your virgin user name to bt_test@startup_domain on your router or modem, you can leave your password in as it will be ignored).
you will probably find that your speed improves, which will give you ammunition to fire at Virgin to improve your connection speeds.

I also had a terribly slow connection to Virgin this week. At its worse it was about 1mb but now back to 5.5mb. Are you a new customer to Virgin? The reason I ask is that Virgin claims to throttle back the connection in the first 2 weeks of takeup.
To test my connection speed I use

They don't throttle your speed back for 2 weeks. They work like every other ISP in the fact for the first 10 days of being on dsl max your in a stabalisation period.
This is in fact a BT procedure who monitor your line every time you connect for this 10 day period. You may find that each and every time you connect the speed changes in these 10 days, but may only be a small change.
At the end of that 10 day period, BT place your speed on the average you were connecting with no problems. So if the most you can get is 8 meg, you may find your final speed is more like 5 as most lines are old and crap, and so are BT!0 -
Why is it that the max I have every had (sometime ago) was 2 meg?0

Why do I get a faster speed in the morning and early hours?0

presumably less people using your "connection" (not sure of the correct word) at those times0

Maximum Stable Rate: The Maximum Stable rate (or MSR) is a line rate threshold established by BT over the first 10 days of service on the 8000 services. It is used to determine when a drop in line rate would be considered a fault. Once an MSR is established BT will accept a fault report if the line rate drops by 30% or more. e.g. if the MSR established is 8192kbps a fault can be reported when the line rate drops to 5734kbps or less.
NOTE: An MSR is only established after a connection has been established for a period of at least 15 minutes. If you power down your ADSL equipment it may take longer to establish an MSR, and faults may only be reported if the line rate drops below 288kbps.
