Night storage heater problems

Hi folks, I hope you can help me.

I've just moved into a new flat which has a night stoarge heater in the living room. I turned it on the other day so that it could do it's thing overnight. After about an hour, it was giving out heat(around 2.30pm). Surely this is wrong, right? Beside it, there is are 2 switches on the wall, one with the cable coming for the heater going into the wall, then another stand alone switch on the wall*which I presume is linked to it). I have read an online instruction and I have got the setiings correct..... Any ideas why this is happening please?
p.s. I am 100% on an economy 7 tariff.

  • Could it be something like a booster switch. Heat is released when you flick the switch from the stored heat.
I'm sure somone will be along to give you a better answer.
If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.

I was thinking that, but this was the first time this heater had been used this year, so there would've been no heat to release, i guess. It's actually heating up immediately after switching it on in the daytime.
    Thanks.

seems like you have a dual type NSH one switch on the wall supplies the off peak part, the other supplies the convector / fan part.

That makes sense now that you say this! Which switch would you say is which? The stand alone is the off peak, and the switch with the cable controls it manualy?

difficult to see from here...... try one switch to see if the convector part comes on....an indicator light or even a clicking sound, if so, the other switch will be the off peak part and will need to be on if you want heat tomorrow. set the input to medium and the output to lowish. see how you go with that.

It neither has a light or when I turn them on there is no click. I guess it'll be a case of trying one and seeing if hest comes through during the day? Also, it only has an input control to the right and a 'boost' control to the left.

is there not a flip down bit with other controls on? as you suggested that it was heating up immediately during the daytime.

It only has the 2 controls I mentioned under a flap(input and boost). When I say immediately, I mean, within an hour it's producing heat just like it should when turning on overnight. It's gotta be something to do with the 2 wall switches like you suggested. I'm lost with it!! It's really old by the looks of it too!

hmmm, if there are no other controls, then it must be just a standard single input night storage heater, as for the two switches on the wall though, I would say that the second switch was meant for the dual type NSH but has been replaced with the one you have.

  • It's been there since the property was built. I believe it's a Dimplex XT24. So, does your previous advice still apply in light of the single input?
