Sorry but I'm afraid I have no idea and don't know how to go about finding out. When I right click the wireless symbol with the red cross, Open Intel PROSet/Wireless displays but is greyed out. This was the case before running autoruns and deselecting ZCfgSvc.exe - not sure if this points to windows managing wireless connection.

Would I do any harm if I removed 'Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Software' from the add o remove program list?

The only window I can find similar to the one you posted is by going network connections, Wireless network connection. I then get a window Wireless Network Connection Status with only 2 tabs, General & Support. Sorry but don't know how to post it.

Just rebooted the laptop to check its performance, hence the delay! Icons pop up on desktop in 2 lots, and then slowly one by one show there correct icon image. Over 5 minutes to boot up. It also still doesn't pause at the account stage. It's ok if you log out. Shows the main account and guest account and you can then log in on either.

still not clear if windows is managing or intel, suggest you switch to windows, and reinput the wireless key into windows wireless config if necessary

Ok I've done that. system rebooted. doesn't seem to have made any difference to the speed but the wireless icon with the red cross has dissapeared from the system tray. Internet still works and there was no need to re-enter any key.

CPU usage is right down, but that was the case before. Under the processes tab, there are 13 entries of svchost.exe - Is this normal? Haven't tried reinstalling xp yet.
