SOLVED!

thanks to Expresso and his picture, this oldie has moved furniture and been down on his hands and knees and discovered there was an ADSL faceplate on the master socket. I removed the cable from the test hole, replaced the adsl cover, removed the micro filter and entered the phone and internet cables into their respective openings and it works.

Seemingly my daughter and her husband, with no knowledge of ADSL covers, just followed along the path of thinking "we must have a filter" and fitted one which I presume clashed and caused the problem.

I would like to think that someone somewhere might learn from this.

I'm grateful to those who have tried to help and in a way, I'm pleased I had visited this weekend, as stressful as it has been trying to resolve this issue, because maybe without us, they would still be dongling away and getting more frustrated.

Result! A surprising number of people think that if one filter is good, then two must be better...kind of cancels out those who think that none at all will be just fine. I encountered one property where an extension filter had been removed when decorating 'because it made the wall look untidy'...
