ryanair delays EMA - Faro

Hi - can anyone advise please? we flew EMA to Faro, flight should have been 20.05, but was never going to leave on time as no gate details were forthcoming. Eventually, around 8pm, it came up delayed. No Ryanair staff to be found, I even got another airline's staff to put a call out for them but apparently they'd all gone home because they knew the flight would be delayed?!
Servisair staff gave us a little info - the flight had not left Faro due to technical issues, this story was later updated to tell us that a different plan had to go to Faro to carry out the flight.
I tried for vouchers as it was apparent that our flight would be over 3 hours late, and was told that we couldn't have any until the flight was actually late. We finally received £3 (might be £3.50) each for food.
I was gravely concerned as Faro usually closes at midnight, but thankfully we managed to fly at 12.30am, so over 4 hours delay. Its probably not relevant but as I am not a good passenger, I passed out on the plane a couple of minutes after take off, so all in all, not a great experience!
Am I entitled to a compensation claim for the delay given it was a technical issue? Perhaps worth mentioning that many flights were delyed that night due to French ATC, but this was not the case with ours.

Many thanks
RFI

Have you asked ryanair for their formal response to the reason for the delay?

As in Martin's article here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/flight-delays the compensation payable through the European directive has been put on hold (probably for a couple of years)

Prior to this it was calculated on the length of journey and the delay to the arrival time (not departure delay)

Although your particular flight was not affected by the strike they may well say that the aircraft was affected in a previous journey hence the delay
