Can you not use the tax credits/dla to pay for the mattresses if they need them - DLA is there to be used for any special needs.
I'd have perhaps bought a new washing machine over a holiday though (unless it wasnt broken in June).0 -
When applying for a grant/loan for household items they will look in argos catalogue etc and see the basic price and offer you that. So 2 matress's could be £50 each and that is all they will offer you. Despite you wanting/needing a much better quality one. Same with a bed, you can get a single bed with matress very very cheaply from argos.0

We don't get tax credits. We don't even get child benefit as it is taken off our income support, but that is a different story.
I know DLA is for special needs but it is used in their daily life. We have to pay for fuel as walking can be painful. We pay for swimming lessons, constant replacements of shoes and clothes and we save a little to pay for holidays. (All UK)
I know the latter are not considered essential but we all need a break and even our tent is almost bigger than the house.
I have just had a look at the Family Fund and have requested a form.
Thanks to all for advice/help.0 -

have you ever thought about renting a washing machine in the mean time? only costs few pounds a week, where i live one of the repair shops rents them out on a weekly basis.
Also have you thought about contacting the salvation army or other local churches? they often have fund/resources.
Hope that helps xBe who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind. They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.0 -
Thanks. I did look into renting but none that local so it was going to be quite costly. However as a temporary measure maybe, depends if they have a minimum term.0
