What are the rules in banks doing this? Can they legally do this? And are they in breach of the banking code of practice in doing so?
Can anyone please advise?
If the direct debit is not claimed within a set period it normally expires and a new mandate is required. Also if you have a direct debit go unpaid, banks normally reserve the right to cancel the direct debit - this is normally stipulated in the terms and conditions of the account.Best Regards

ive recently tried to reset a dd with sky for my package with them yet when sky go to my bank with the dd mandate rbs reject it saying the problem lies with sky when i contact sky they say its the bank thats the problem not them there was two months were dds were returned unpaid but was paid over the phone sky keep asking me would i like to set up a dd with them and every month for the past 2 ive said yes they then send me a letter out telling me there is a problem with your bank we will invoice you for payment instead at £4 a pop for your statement the bank say there is a problem with the ref no sky use and sky say there isnt. is there anybody out there who knows whos at fault here as my head is getting realy sore now from banging it of the brick wall as none of them seem to want to accept responsabilty for this errror:mad:
With this, the bank have cancelled the direct debit because it has gone unpaid 2 months in a row. If you check their terms and conditions, it states they can do this. They will not let you reinstate that direct debit for a period of 3 months following cancellation. Thus you will have to find an alternative payment method until such time has passed.Best Regards

Banks automatically cancel direct debits 13 months after non-use
They also cancel them if the DD has been returned unpaid twice
Other than that there's no reason they should cancel it unless you or they close the account or the account is frozen for some other reason; i.e. debt management, fraud, etc.
A change of sort code and account number shouldn't cancel the DD but might; only takes a jiffy to set back upCashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Cahoot (Santander) did with me too. I've had DD for my credit card for at least the last 3 years, paid in full every month. For some reason Sept payment was rejected by bank as having no mandate in place. I'd not changed anything. Oct was paid ok and again I've not changed anything since the Sept one was rejected.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
