urgent advice needed please.

my lab just walked into the lounge ,laid down in front of my husband and myself and suddenly her eyes rolled back and her head and neck twisted to the side as this was happening.i panicked and started crying and shouted for my hubby to come and help her with me.
this carried on for a couple of mins and then she seemed to go back to normal.i thought she was dying.it seemed like she felt unwell and came to us for help.
is it a stroke.do i need to call a vet out or see how she goes??im heartbroken at this and wondered if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone can advise?thankyou.

Get or speak to a vet now-would you forgive yourself if something happened tonight whilst you were sleeping?

Sounds like she had some sort of fit. I'd call a vet immediately.
  • Vet. If it goes onto the answer phone it will give you an emergency contact number.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

You shouldn't be asking for medical advice on a forum - especially regarding something so urgent! Get an emergency appointment for your dog and get her seen by a vet asap. I hope everything goes ok. I don't want to sound harsh but, cannot believe your first port of call after something so scary and upsetting would be... a forum? And not an immediate vet visit?

empty pockets-what a very rude, arrogant person you are.i was asking for advice and if it had happened to anyone else, thats all but oops, sorry boss,i didnt mean to break the rules.
you say immediate visit to vets, you must be lucky where you live as they are all shut here.plus for your information the vet has already now been out so dont shout me down as if i dont care about my dog as i got straight on the phone and asked for urgent call out after my post.i just wanted help and advice from people that may have been in the same situation, thats all but dont worry-i wont bother next time as i didnt realise there would be someone ready to clobber me for it.
its people like you that are ready to pounce that put people off these forums.i thought they were only on the benefits board but now theres one here too !! thanks for just making my evening the saddest in a long long time.
  • Hi, lady lumps, really hope your dog is ok *hugs*

I agree empty pockets thats a very harsh post, really not needed when all she is asking for is advice, she clearly loves her dog and just panicked and thought maybe someone would perhaps reply quickly on here who had been in a similar situation, what did the vet lady lumps?

I have to disagree with both ladylumps and missy spud. My sentiments are completely with ep on this. In an emergency situation with your dog (or any animal) collapsing in front of you, the first thing you do before anything else is call the vets. If the vet says they are on their way to you, then fine post for assurance if you like but do not post first. Your priority is your pet, not your feelings/emotions.

While your vets might be shut in an evening, they will have an emergency practice that clients can call out of hours either to take the animal to the vets or for advice.

So IMO, your priority in this situation should have been call vets first, follow their instructions and then post later. What if by posting first, you caused a delay in treatment of your animal which caused serious complications. Yes, I know you don't want to hear this and you are feeling emotional and likely in shock but it is the truth.

My little dog collapsed while out on a walk (fortunately we hadn't gone far) and a neighbour was just getting back from work, he was told in no uncertain terms to get back in the car and drive me to the vets - while we drove I was ringing the vets to say I'm on my way, little dog collapsed, don't close the surgery. Guess what they didn't. If they had already been shut then it would have been straight to the emergency vets (30 mins away). Not once did I think about posting on a forum / texting people for advice.

You may think ep harsh, I think not.

ladylumps45 I can understand you being so upset but the trouble is that so many people tend to post online about their sick pet instead of seeking vet treatment - obviously, you're not one of them but if anyone does post then I think a lot of people automatically assume they are looking on here for free advice because they don't want to pay a vet bill. Just a misunderstanding, that's all ... please don't let it upset you any more!!

Now then, I bet you're still reeling from seeing your little girl like that earlier. Such a frightening thing both for her and for you.

It sounded like a fit to me, although the vet will have diagnosed for certain what it was. My little yorkie had fits and really all I could do was to make sure he didn't harm himself during them.
Sometimes he would be incredibly sleepy afterwards, other times he would get up as though nothing had happened at all!

Trouble is, fits can be caused by all manner of things so it's always best to see the vet to try and find out for definite.
My dog was diagnosed with epilepsy but he went on for years after diagnosis and just had a fit now and then, so it isn't the end of the world!

Plus, there are many medications now that can help control even the most severe cases, so there are plenty of options to try if that is what it turns out to be.

It might, of course, have just been one of those things that never happen again (fingers crossed!)

Do let us know what the vet said and how she is!

.. just wanted to add, it was interesting you said it seemed like your girl came to find you for help ... no matter what was happening, Toby would ALWAYS come straight to me seconds before a fit came on, even if he was in the first "wobbly" stage.

Empty pockets was not being rude or harsh, read the post again OP.
NO one can give medical advice on here. You need to call your vets asap.
It sounds like a fit to me but again, please ring the vets to at least talk to them.

I really hope your dog is okay.

Firslty Emptypockets is not rude or arrogant, she has given you some good advice as did the other 3 posters above her. YOu would be wise to use it.

I must be one of the lucky ones as you call it. If my dog needs a Vet at whatever time then I ring him up, thats 24/7 365 days.

Would you be saying a poster had spoiled your evening if your dog took a turn for the worst after using their advice? I think not you would be shouting from the rooftops that the wrong advice was given.

Think again, I bet everyone including myself reading this would offer you the same advice, phone your Vet and if at all worried get them to home visit ASAP.

I Hope your dog is ok, its horrible to have an ill pet. Many of us know the feeling all too well.
