  • Hi,

As a wholly self-employed person I cant comment on the actual functionality of the tool.

    Generally though:

People will Need to concentrate fully on the text as any tax matters glaze people over. I would if possible remove the ads and links to other site coverage on the right hand side early on on this subject if possible to allow full focus on text.

Started to lose the flow of information at the point youre already aware of as I see annotations 'link this phrase...etc'.This section needs clarity as it's the crux of the explanation..

    Sorry cant be more Helpful.

The Dropdown menu thats headed 'im wholly self-employed' dosent need as much info? maybe 'this matter dosent concern you, sleep easy'? ;)

Make sure you fill out a P616 (pension enquiry form) which will be sent to you by HMRC as you approach retirement age. This will help to ensure you are put onto the right tax code from the outset.

    its a P161, not a P616

The box where you enter your age is ambiguous.

Male or female is irrelevant. People are taxed the same. Its clearer if for the age you said 64 and under, rather than 60-65. and then another category 65-74

No mention of Married Couples Allowance, or Blind Persons Allowance.

Thanks for posting the codechecker, some good info there. I am paying emergency tax (code BR - N) so I wanted to know if, how & when I would get a refund. I understand it a lot better now thanks Martin. :)
Big thanks to all who contribute to the forums. Be lucky everyone and be safe!

A common reason for having a different tax code to the basic allowance (whatever the age) is an outstanding tax bill from earlier years. If below a certain level, the current tax code is reduced.

Think this should be covered in the "before using the tax code checker" section.

I'd like to know if the personal allowance has remained the same in years gone by? to 5th april 2009, tax code was 539L and the difference was -£1085 ...does mean that i have to pay it back?!
    £20k in 2023 = £2718 £2023 in 2023 = £196.41 Grocery challenge £250= £195.80 **MONEY MAKES ME HAPPY**
  • Doesn't really help me, I've got paye and medical insurance and 3 small pensions.

But for someone with less complicated tax I'm sure would find this helpful.

    • Please try and break the tool with different entries and let us know if it works- or any glitches. One note, the quick "jump to " links at the top of the page, "step 4 watch your future code" doesn't jump to step 4. The rest work though :D

Very helpful and informative but I had 2 jobs in 08/09 and my P60s both show Tax Code 603L. When I input this in your 'tax checker' it comes out right but I'm being asked to pay back the tax as I shouldn't have had a personal allowance on my second job! The tax checker doesn't cope with this situation.
Unfortunately for me the same will happen for 09/10 tax year. The letter they sent said that they will be in touch after 31 December to arrange payment. Might I end up paying for both years blunders at the same time?

I am the sort of person most likely to go straight to click on the calc tool, then read the text if required. Martin Lewis is on our side therefore we trust the research and text to be correct, just give us the tools to check then follow with guide for exceptions. keep up the good work.
