Damaged car - paintwork

Hi I unfortunately today bumped into a stationary vehicle in the supermarket car park. Upon doing so I have buffed the other vehicle and a bit of paint work has come off revealing rust. The section I would say is about 10 - 15cm's long and about 7cm in height. I have very little damage to my vehicle and have agreed with the owner that I will pay them for the work they have done rather than going through the insurance.

Does anyone have a rough idea of how much this might cost to repair at a garage as I don't want to get ripped off?

Thanks in advance!

    I hope you took photos.

Or you could end up funding a new panel!

A decent bodyshop doing a quality repair will probably charge about £300 +VAT per panel that they have to prep and spray.

I'd have thought smaller bodyshops (one man bands) would be £150 ish per panel (lowest near me is £100 per panel but thats cheapest of the cheap quick spray job), but i dont forsee the person whos car you damaged having any urge to use one.

If it is metallic paint, it could quite feasibly result in a full side respray ( to get a proper colour and spray pattern match ) costing several hundred pounds. To remove the paint to metal, you're going to possibly have bent something which again is going to cost a fair bit to straighten.

If you were banking on £100, you're sorely mistaken.

That's a slight concern that you say the paint revealed rust underneath and not just primer - is it an older car that you bumped? The issue (and I am not a car expert) imo is that simply repainting over rust won't address the rust problem itself - might be worth discussing that with the other driver - were there aware of a rust problem?

Regarding a simple paint retouch, I would recommend a mobile unit such as Chips Away, they have country wide franchises. I haven't used them per-se for paint touch ups but did use them to do two of my alloys that were scuffed and this cost me £90 for the pair. They do a localised paint fix on the area affected only rather than the whole panel (imo, even a complete panel respray will not 100% match the rest of the bodywork).

what panel did you hit front rear? if it revealed rust in the front panel say a wing then a new wing would suffice then priming and painting and clear coat then clear coat polishing, paint isnt cheap these days, this would cost a respectable amount of money, id say for a tidy job 300-400 pounds,
if rear panel then the whole panel is going to have to go back to metal as rust is evident to find the extent of how much has eaten away, possible welding? Possible rear panel replacement depending on cost efficiency, if it is rear then expect about 500-600 pound as rust treatment is needed, filling, sanding, possible welding if the panel is that bad with rust and needs cutting out and replacing, priming, painting, clear coat, polishing. either way its gunna cost you a pretty penny.
i would contact the person you hit and ask if you could go allong with them when getting quotes from different garages so you know yourself the extent that is needed to be done, either that make ask them to give you three written quotes from three different repairers.

If the car you hit is old, why not offer them some cash.......they may decide not to have it repaired & take the cash.

If there is a rust problem, I am not sure I'd be offering to foot the bill for that - yes, you scraped the paint and should really be covering the cost for that, but if there is an underlying rust problem that needs treating, that isn't as a result from your dink.
