a fun fact i learn whilst doing this assignment is that from Jan 2006 until Feb 2009 the PSNI raised £17,456 from auctioning off things that had been found and handed in but never claimed by the owner or the finder. i think that is crazy but it all goes to charities but it just goes to show how much we lose!

I found it difficult to determine how long I should wait before asking the police if an item had been claimed. Some people told me 3 months, others 28 days. I think I left it just over a month before I went back and reclaimed the phone. The police told me they work closely with the mobile companies regarding lost or stolen phones and I assumed that they would trace the owner through the IMEI number. All they did was take the SIM card out before they gave me the phone. In the meantime the owner had probably reported the phone lost or stolen (they left it on a table in a cafe) and claimed a new one on their insurance. Because the phone was security code locked I had no way of tracing the owner myself.

If 'joe public' knew the PSNI's policy and procedure for 'lost and found' I'm sure they'd have a lot fewer items to auction.

I found an expensive camera once whilst walking along the beach in the Dominican Republic. Didn't feel happy about trusting the hotel staff with it so had a nosy thro the pics to see if I could recognise anyone in them...(long shot!). To my surprise the first pic was of a shot of a piece of paper with the owner's name and address on it in Italy. This was on the last day of our holiday so I brought the camera home with me and then posted it off to Italy with a letter of explanation. About a week later I received a big box of Italian goodies and a lovely letter from the owner....the couple had been on honeymoon and had been devastated to lose their photos.

I now do a similar thing with a 'name and mobile phone no photo' thing with my cameras.....:)

That's a brilliant idea to leave contact details on the camera in that way. Not sure I'd leave my address but certainly a name and telephone number just in case.

Nice story and a brilliant idea about taking a pic of your info.

I found a handbag on the road once, the owner must have drove off with it on the roof of the car. I looked in it to see who owned it and found the address of the person. Fortunately they lived close by and i handed it in to them. They weren't overly excited to see me or the handbag, knowing I had looked through it, maybe it was shock or worry on their part, but at least I felt better by doing them a favour.

I once had my bag 'taken' from The Mercury (now Judes) on the Ormeau Road...my own fault for not watching it! Woke up the next morning with a banging hangover made worse by the fact I'd lost my bag, keys, purse, phone etc. My mum got a call from a lady living closeby who had found it in her garden! All they took was my mobile and wallet...didn't open the inside pocket where I'd stored my notes and credit cards! The mobile was a pay-as-you-go that I blocked so all they really got was some loose change! The lady had recognised my name from my credit cards as having been at the same primary school as her daughter (I was 24 at this stage!) and had found us in the phonebook.

When I was younger I lost my rabbit..it got out of it's hutch and was last seen playing with the neighbour's cats....! Years later my sister became friendly with a girl who lived a few streets away...and she had my rabbit as she was able to tell us when she found it in her garden! Needless to say by then I didn't miss cleaning out it's hutch and never asked to have it back!!!

Lost my wallet twice:o both times fell out of unsuitable jacket pockets, you would think I would learn the first time:o

First time was outside my aunties house, her neighbor found it and trailed the phone book until she got the correct owner:) Large box of chocs and a hug later I had it back. Second time I lost it in a pub toilet, my uncle found it kicked under a sink and returned it to me. All cards where there OK but the 40 quid cash was gone:o a small price to pay for my stupidity.

I always seem to find money in the street, small amounts are fair game:T Found money in my local Tesco's twice, handed into cashier twice, the first cashier you would of thought I had taken it out of her pocket or her till the reaction I got:eek: the second time the cashier was lovely and asked for my name contact to give me the fiver should it not be claimed, I asked her to put it in the charity tin if not claimed. Next time I was in she recognized me and said she had put it in the tin:T
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
