  • Metalgal...what uni course are you doing that involves such an interesting assignment and are you planning to publish your results sometime ???
Belfastgirl23 your comments about losing a stone and a half had tears rolling down my face.
The comments posted so far are generally quite reassuring that there are actually still some decent and honest folk about.:T

Here are some of my 'lost and found' stories......

DD accidently left a bag (containing clothes she'd just bought) on the bus on the way home from town. She hung about until the bus was on the return journey to Belfast and asked the driver if she could have a quick look for her bag.He was able to produce it straight away :j.He said another passanger had handed the bag to him for safekeeping.:T

I found a mobile phone in the underground carpark in Forestside shopping centre.I was in a rush to get home and had no time to go back upstairs to find a security guard, so I took the phone home. I made contact with the rightfull owner and returned the phone to them later that day.

My MIL lost her engagement ring years ago,and (because I was always trying it on) she asked me if I had it because it wasn't in it's usual place:eek: For years I felt guilty about the missing ring and was delighted when MIL found it....at the bottom of a flight bag ????.....She then gave me the ring anyway because she knew how much I loved it :)

I once lost a little sharp knife - I had only used it once and it simply disappeared from my kitchen. Imagine my surprise when it turned up about a year later under the passenger seat of my car. I have no idea how it got there.

Once I found a wallet on the ground outside the student's union in Belfast. I had a little poke inside it to see if I could find out who owned it. There was no phone number but there was a name and address so I sent a letter to say that the wallet had been found and was available to collect. The person who owned it called round a few days later with a box of choccies all for me!

Once I lost my wallet in Wembley. I retraced my steps and went to the restaurant I'd been in that evening but it never reappeared. I was upset as it was a wallet I'd been given when I worked in Italy and was quite unique.

Shortly after I bought my house I unwittingly dropped a door key outside. Around the same time there were builders coming and going as the development was in the final stages of construction. The tiler showed up unannounced when I was out, obviously couldn't get in, then moaned to one of the builders. The builder had found my key and was keeping it to return to me, but instead let the tiler in who got a day's work done without me even knowing he was going to show up.

I'm very wary about handing things over to another person who I hope will pass it on. Maybe its my suspicious mind, but I expect the security guard to pinch it!

Best thing to do if you find a mobile phone of course .... is to call someone on the address book! :T

Btw, I found a £20 note on an old BMX track (remember them!?) when I was about 10. Being 10, and £20 being worth more then than it is today, it felt like Christmas had come early

Hmm, I lost my skateboard (home-made from spare parts, so one of a kind) when I was in primary school, prob around P7. When I say lost more like left it at my a$$, but when your 10 you expect it to be where you left it.

Anyhow 3 years later during the last couple of weeks of term at secondary school a fellow pupil who had been in my class for 3 years (but didnt live anywhere near me so never really got on) asked me where I lived and when I told him he said "oh yeah, I know where that is, I went to the skip round there to dump stuff with my dad and found a class skateboard". In fairness there was a council skip out our back.

Yup, turns out it was mine, he even decribed the deep groove in it where a car had run over it and still had it. I never got it back off him though, strange how you remember these things, that was near 18 years ago!

    I've found:

£20 note in a shop, turned out someone had just cashed thier pay at the PO and then claimed it.

A wallet in belfast (no money) phoned a number in it and the owner came round a got it.

A fat wallet in mcdonalds a couple of months ago, just at the foot of the counter, looked round and there were 4 elderly ppl just sitting down and turned out it was one of thiers (or else they lied and just said it was as I didnt open it).

A set of car rental keys while on holiday in florida, waited around to see if anyone would come round looking for then (the reg was on the fob and it costs $400 to replace them as the rental places do not keep spares). No one did so give them to a security guard with a big hat.

Actually I've found loads of stuff over the years, I guess I walk around with my head down alot.

My greatest feeling of a loss was a toy I just bought while in portrush and lost it on a rollercoaster in barrys. Leason learned early on not to loose stuff, I was devistated for days. Stupid thing only cost a quid, but I didnt have much growing up and my friend who bought the same glow in the dark flashy skull, still had his.

Sorry but loose money found in the street is fair game for me. Well we are talking 1p 2p 5p or 20p the latter last week. I did find a plastic fiver last year laying in the gutter.

Some years ago found a purse outside the florist's on the Ormeau Road. Picked it up and walked into the shop to hand it in. The owner was a customer standing in the shop, who immediately checked I hadn't pinched any of her cards!!!!!! She said as much. Hope the !!!!! never had any luck after that one.
  • Hi
I recently found a purse on a bus with a substantial amount of cash. The purse was given to the bus driver however, never handed in to the depot!! After a few weeks I put a notice in local paper to say that a purse had handed in and the owner got in touch through the paper. This then resulted in a police and Translink investigation! The owner did get her money and purse back eventually (after 6 weeks!) and don't know what happened to the driver!
Owner of the purse very kindly called with flowers and £80 in the most beautiful card which reduced me to tears
I've found a number of things and would always do what I can to trace the owner - I live by the motto what if it was me?:)

    thanks everyone for the stories!

my uni assignment is looking at the current law on lost property and part of the assignment is to make suggestions for changes to the law or any new laws or procedures that should be introduced. im amazed by the response for just this thread so it shows how important it actually is.

a fun fact i learn whilst doing this assignment is that from Jan 2006 until Feb 2009 the PSNI raised £17,456 from auctioning off things that had been found and handed in but never claimed by the owner or the finder. i think that is crazy but it all goes to charities but it just goes to show how much we lose!

i think this was a very clever assignment to set as it really gets you thinking about how much simply depends on peoples morals!
