Upgraded from 3GS to 4 contact messages and settings wont sync

I am hoping someone can help me I have spent the evening going mental trying to do what should be a case of simply plugging the new phone in and syncing as a back up of the 3GS that I just took out.

But no..

It starts to sync all the apps but none of my contacts go over and nor do my messages or settings or anything.

They are both 32GB both from Tesco and should just sync but even when I hit the right click and restore from back up all these things are not there.

I would like to get rid of all the old back ups on my laptop and then just reinstall this one.

Or at a push use another computer. (which I would rather not do)

can anyone help me sort this problem please?

Just in case anyone sees this and has the same problem I deleted all other backups and then synced the old iPhone and then plugged in the new one and restored from back up of the one I had just done.

To delete all the old back ups it is in edit> preferences >devices>delete
