Buying my first laptop - Advice please.

Options
Hello - I am hoping to buy my first laptop and I don't have a lot of "know how." Is it possible to buy a laptop complete with Microsoft Office 2010 installed? Is Intel core 2 due processor 2 GHZ, RAM 4 GB and 500GB Hard Drive good? I have looked on line but I'm out of my depth - I'm afraid I don't really understand what all the terms mean. Any advice much appreciated.

most new laptops will come with a trial version off office already installed but depending on the prices you would normally uninstall that and then install the one you buy.

if you are a student then you can get the whole lot of office for £50.
if not then if the home and student edition suits your needs then buy that.

other than that the specs you mention are pretty good, but if you want suggestions you could tell us what you want to use the laptop for and what screen size you are looking for and your price range

Its got the same RAM as my desktop, same CPU and bigger HDD. I have no plans on upgrading my desktop for another few years.
  • Thank you for all the replies. I use email quite a lot and I'm on line most days (a privilege since retirement) browsing and doing on line banking etc.

I would be really stuck without my computer now although I'm still not very good with it. I would like something really quite fast, if possible, and I am very happy with the Plusnet Package I have.

A screen of about 14" to 17" would be fine and hope to spend a total of about £800 maximum - preferably a bit less. I would be using it mostly at home and would very rarely need to use it away from home.

    Many thanks.

Take a look at this; it's classed as a 'business' machine but I would ignore the nomenclature  Good build quality; price range; screen size; powerful enough -- and more -- for your needs. anyhow, take a peek:

Not sure whether Office would be pre-installed; unlikely, but it might be configurable that way on the HP website. Sometimes, Works is included instead and Office is supplied as a 60-day usage trial -- that's what my HP had.
  • You need to consider how portable you want it to be and especially in a laptop don't compare numbers. Build quality, and design count for a lot as the machine has to cool itself in a tightly packed space. For ultimate portability and in you price range the new MacBook Air (if you get the 15% student discount) can't be beat. OSX will run MS Office.

Also do you really need office? Google Doc's and Open Office are free.
  • Before it starts the last thing I want to do is start a Mac V Windows fight. Just offering an option and an opinion.

Lol, thread about the new Macbook Air here: if the OP is interested. Although, in this instance, I'd go with the HP;)
  • If I wasn't a Mac user I would go HP or maybe Sony Vaio I reckon. May I just ask Crimson what Operating System do you use? Windows XP? Vista? Ubuntu?
