Sunderland Football Match

Can anyone give me advice? I have booked a hotel to go from Edinburgh to Newcastle and train tickets to suit for Sunderland/Newcastle game on 16th January next year.
Was planning to surprise bf with ticket to game on the sunday for his christmas.
However, never having had anything to do with football before I find that this game is a "Derby" and I cannot just book at ticket without having a previous "history" with the club.
Can anyone advise what I need to do ? also is this match going to be really popular and no ticket avaiable etc?
Hope someone can help in my dilemma
I am posting here as it is for a gift but maybe it is in wrong place.
If so, Sorry

Thanks
Flora

Sorry but you'll have absolutely no chance of getting a ticket as a neutral for that match. It'll be a sell out.

Do you know anyone with a Sunderland season ticket? They can usually buy additional tickets for family and friends.

Then tickets are released to non-season ticket holders with a purchase history. I'm in this group and I'm not getting my hopes up of getting tickets to be honest as they'll sell out almost immediately that they go on sale.

Is your bf a Newcastle or a Sunderland supporter? The teams are huge rivals and he'll be removed if he is a Newcastle fan sitting in the Sunderland seats or vice versa.

Yes, if you have no connections then using a tout will be the only way to get tickets. If they are in the wrong end, make sure you sit on your hands during the game! They treat each other pretty badly at derby games!

Failing that you'll be able to enjoy the pre-match atmosphere in Sunderland then retire to a pub in town to watch the game on telly.
  • I don't know any Sunderland Football Fans Becles, looks like I am not gonna get a ticket at all unless I find a Sunderland Season Ticket holder who is able to buy an extra ticket then?
    Any offers?
BF just like to go to different games, we were recently down in Nottingham and he went to see a Forest game and also visted County Stadium, also have been to a QPR game when in London.
I just though "The Stadium of Light" sound a great place for his next visit and looked for the first home game after christmas!
Thanks also for your comments Quentin I am not sure what to do now.

I should have stuck to socks and hankies for christmas !

    Thanks guys

There is usually tickets avaliable that go on general sale for the game, usually in the concourse or south stand, you need to get on the phone as soon as the lines are open and when the day is announced, you ll have to persevere, i agree you may have problems if you dont have history with the club so it wont hurt to phone up the stadium of light beforehand and ask how you stand. Be honest and tell them your a neutral looking to buy a couple of tickets and what are your chances.. good luck

No chance I'm afraid, all Newcastle/Sunderland games are sell outs & such is the animosity, vitriol & bad blood between the 2 clubs it wouldn't be great day out for the neutral. Historically there's very little good football played & is more like a battle then an entertaining game! I'd compare it with an Old Firm match without the religion

Can you change your hotel and train tickets to another weekend? It'll be much easier getting tickets for other fixtures.

Newcastle v Sunderland match at the end of this month has not sold out and it currently on general sale so I see no reason why that may not be the case for the return match.

I agree, i have been to many derbies and there were seats that are empty, albeit up in the gods. If you leave it late they only offer single seats around the ground.

Thanks everyone for all your comments.
I have had a look around and see there is a Durham game on the Satuday 15th january, so maybe I can get a ticket and he can go to that and if I manage to get a ticket for the Sunderland game he will be even happier.
Any other advise will be appreciated
    Thank you all so much
