White or Ivory????

Hey Ladies,

I always assumed I would marry in white - I dont think I even knew wedding dresses came in ivory (but I hadnt ever thought about it - im not one who has been dreaming and planning my wedding since I was a little girl). But then I sent into debenhams and the lady that worked there said noone wears white to marry anymore as they cant carry it off. Also at the national wedding show I would say 90% of the dresses were ivory.........so now I dont really know what to do?

What colour are you marrying in?:o

    Im wearing Ivory.

I think its true that white is a very difficult colour to pull off. It can have ! "draining" effect, particularly if you're very pale all ready.

If you wear ivory most people will just assume its white anyway. I dont think many people expect pure white dresses, it certainly wasnt a standard colour in the wedding dress shops i went to, most were ivory in varying shades.

Yeah thats what the person in the wedding shop where i got my dress from said too. If you want to marry in white then go for it. however my dress is in Alabaster/Pewter accent - I would say its a cross between a light gold and ivory mixed together (its very difficult to explain) but its really nice

I got married in 1989 and I'm sure that ivory then was a shade darker than now - I didn't want white but had trouble finding an ivory that didnt seem to creamy coloured. Now there's a much nicer choice of pale ivory without going pure white. I agree that white can seem harsher and not so easy to carry off, unless you have darker colouring, but there's so much choice of shades now. This time round I'm hoping to wear purple :)

    All depends on
    1) type of fabric ie satin, chiffon, taffeta
    2) synthetic or silk

You have to be very lucky to be able to wear white these days. Evidently us brits don't have the right colouring

Ivory looks white until you put it against white, then there is a distinct difference.
Many of the fabrics I order where silk is concerned have the 'bleached' description which can look ivory. It's a mine field as the white 'tones' vary too.
As a general rule, the paler the complexion the ivory/colour you should go.
Black (am I allowed to say that? ) ladies can carry white brilliantly.
However, I have a few ladies opting for white silk dupion as it isn't as bright as synthetic. They seem more than happy with that.
  • Thanks everyone! Ive gone for Ivory - people often comment on me looking pale so dont think I could carry off white!

o great i am pale and have a white dress lol perhaps i will think about a fake tan after all :O
  • AHHHHHh I am pale!! (but i have never thought white didnt suit me tbh- it makes me look more tanned?)

I hadnt thought of this, i ordered my dress in white! I didnt really want it in white- i wanted white/silver, but the seller on ebay didnt understand because the colours number i choose wasnt white/silver aparently.

I considered Ivory, but didnt know what ivory would look like.

So now im thinking i should have gone with my innitial decision to go with white/silver.

fabric is: satin, taffeta and organza

After looking at some beautifull white satin images on google- i decided to go white.

I wore Diamond White, that's what it said on the tags, but to mine and everyone else's eye, it was Ivory!
