Let me rephrase. While it should be checked everyday, when there's counter staff, an old fashioned quick deposit letterbox and no envelopes by the ATM, it's rare for anyone to ever really pay in there. Since the ATM is on a time delay and the branch needs to be closed to open it up, it often gets overlooked0

I disagree. Plenty of people can only get to the bank out of opening hours, they'll pay in through an ATM then.
Whilst it's not a massive number, I know that my local Halifax generally gets around 5-10 envelopes through the ATM per day, and around 2-5 per day through the inside envelope deposit slot.0 -

The ATM deposits, called "Cashlines" as opposed to "Quick Deposits" (through the letterbox) and "Cash & Deposit Machines transactions" (through the CDMs), have to be checked at least once daily. The deposit part of the ATM is not on a time delay.
The branch would only need to close if the ATM was in the banking hall - I've worked in one of these branches, and the ATM was not able to accept Cashline deposits - probably due to the security.
Anyways, back on topic - the branch will still have the envelopes for the Quick Deposit payments, ask them to go look for it! You are being fobbed off as it should have appeared on your account by now, unless there's issues with the cheque itself, or your sister's account.Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion
