NatWest - need to vent

My OH took a cheque to our local branch on Monday. There was a long queue (as usual) and so he put the cheque into the "hole in the wall" in the quick deposit envelope.

Today still nothing is showing on our account - not even showing that they registered the cheque. He called them and the woman on the phone fobbed him off with "it takes 5 days for the cheque to SHOW!!! We cannot do anything".

I just checked their website and it clearly states that on day 1 it will show on the statement, you just cannot withdraw it!!

Another lie from NatWest and I am really fed up with this...Not the first time this happened.

Off to change to First Direct!! Fingers crossed there won't be any glitch in an account transfer. All our important bills are on this account, need to make sure the mortgage and all goes out without a beat!!

It should be available on your account today. Anytime I pay a cheque into my accounts, its available to withdraw on the 2nd working day after paying it in (even though they say it takes longer). If you've got the receipt for the deposit, I'd take it into the branch and get them to look into it

Today it is the fourth day!!

That is the problem - I can't go to the branch because I am working.
That is why OH called them.

It's only £33 from my sister so not that bother as in worse case scenario she will give me a new cheque, but it's the lies you get from them that annoy me!!

What if I was waiting for that money?

In that case, its gone astray then. Did you give them the serial number from the envelope? It should be printed on the receipt. I'd have thought they'd be able to trace it from that number?

I am sure they will be, but they are refusing to do anything because 5 days didn't pass yet.
Apparently we are supposed to be calling back tomorrow if it doesn't appear.

That is what is angering me - the complete indifference and lies!!

Don't worry, I will get the money on the end. Don't want to have anything to do with this bank any more though!!

  • This reminds me of the Nationwide in Harlow.

I used to regularly pay in money at the cashpoint at the weekend and more often than not there were never any envelopes.

One week I went and bought a pack in WH Smith just to get one I could use.

The next time I just stuffed all the cheques and a couple of grand in loose ten pound notes into the thing and rang them on Monday morning whereupon they had the cheek to have a go at me for not using the right envelope.

If by hole in the wall, you mean a normal ATM then the woman on the phone could well be right. Natwest will only have to balance their ATM once a week, so as long as it still holds sufficient cash, they'll have no reason to go into it to get your deposit out until then. They might even be unaware that your deposit is in there.

The quick deposit letterboxes and the customer deposit machines are emptied and processed every day so you'd need to use one of those in future if you want things processed that day

If the money is paid in via the ATM before 3.30pm it should be credited to the account on the same day.

That is the first time I've heard that NatWest would have such a thing... such a clever ATM machines.
The ones near me are definitely not that clever.
No, he used Quick deposit envelope and the letter box style hole for deposititing it.

And my Nationwide does have this clever ATM - they do show the same/next day.

Whilst the ATM cash would only need to be balanced weekly-ish, when you pay in using an envelope it goes to a separate part, and they should be checking this daily.

(I don't know whether Natwest have ATMs that allow deposits).

The best machines are those that Halifax have - they count the cash/read the cheque and credit it straight away. (HSBC have similar ones but they don't actually read the cheque, and it takes 24 hours to process).
