I have a few primary teacher friends, who have just graduated, can't find a teaching job, they are working in cafes and supermarkets.

Can they not do supply work?
  • I am currently doing an OU degree as well as working in a school. As my income is low most of my course fees are covered by a grant. If I was happy to take longer to do my degree, all my fees would be covered, but I am doing 2 modules a year.

I think for now the best way would be to gain a degree, or at least start part time. Once he has this or almost he should start looking at teacher training options. Currently there are grants, earn as you learn type posts etc. This could all change though before he gets to that stage.

Personally, I am aware of that and although I do have a GTP placement offer, I know this could change by the time I am ready and I therefore have no firm plans, until I am at least 3/4 way through the OU degree.

The OU route proves hard work and dedication, so is certianly NOT an easy option, but interview panels are favourable to this type of degree. To teach primary he must have good english. maths and science qualifications, but to a lower level than secondary.

    Hope this helps?

Hi. That would be better to stick where he is this year, i'm agree.

He doesn't intend to give up his job to do his degree. Plus it's going to take a few years anyway..............

Hi, I have retrained as a special needs teacher after nearly 20 years as a careers adviser. This is my third year of teaching. I have not regretted it, even though it has been hard and a very steep learning curve.

Its always worth appraoching OU for help with fees. Friends have been successful in getting help. Work or Unions can also be souces of support.

Thoughts on subjects. Primary PGCE v competetive. (My uni received 5 applications for every place). Consider shortage subjects eg Science or Maths. (I trained as Secondary science, but ended up teaching Maths!). Your DH will stand a better chance with a degree which links to the school curriculum rather than something like Psychology, sociology etc. (Friends who applied recently with Psychology were not even getting interviews!).

    Good Luck.

Some other shortage subjects are ICT, Design Technology, so if he's a keen computer enthusiast, that may be an option. I know my local college work in conjuction with Universities to provide ICT as a part time degree :)
