Retraining to teach, Student Loan?

Hi,
my OH wants to retrain as a teacher. We can't afford for him to give up his current job in the NHS for him to study full time (we have 2 dependant kids an 18 year old just started Uni), so are looking at other means of him gaining (firstly) his degree, then do his teacher training.
If he was to either do day release or an OU degree, would he be able to apply for a student loan to cover the cost of the fees??
Any advise here is very welcome as we don't know where to start!!

I'm in education and tell him to stick where he is, this time next year there will be 1000's more unemployed teachers. A better forum for you would be http://www.tes.co.uk/0

Has he studied for any Higher Education before?
Depending on the course and your household income he may be entitled to fee and course grants. Information about finance for PT students in 2010/11 can be found on direct.gov.uk HERE but I think the way future funding works is likely to change due to the Spending Review0 -

He wants to teach primary school level, preferably KS2.0 -
There is a shortage of men in primary schools but in general the sector is oversubscribed. What subject does he want to do for his degree?0

If he does an OU degree, he's looking at the 'Open' degree they do (pending advice otherwise)..
There's a possibility he may get help at work to do a degree though, so if that happens, it may have to be related to his current job in information, which may pose a problem (??) as a base for teaching.
Are you from a teaching background?0 -
I have a few primary teacher friends, who have just graduated, can't find a teaching job, they are working in cafes and supermarkets.0
