As mentioned by dogshome and joyful earlier, only the first 500kWh are charged at the tier 1 rate - 500 / 52.14 weeks x 23p is £2.20.

The current British Gas prepayment tariff seems to have daily standing charges instead of a two tier tariff that is even lower.

Check your meter with Cardew's guide above to see if you can fathom what is happening.

Where are you getting the figure of 23p from????

£15 per week minus £3.50 debt is £11.50. 5000 kWh per year is 96 kWh per week. £11.50 divided by 96 is 12p per unit, not 23p.
  • 23p is the unit price on my yearly bill

"The unit price you pay for you electricity is:

    UNIT PRICE 1 23.90 UP TO 500KWh
    UNIT PRICE 2 10.363 THEREAFTER

    STANDING CHARGE 18P PER DAY

It says there in black and white the unit price is 10.363p. If you are using 96 units per week then only the first 10 are charged at 23p.

The only thing that needs clarification is that there is both a daily standing charge and a two tier tariff quoted - but as they are both the same (once you work it out) I think the daily standing charge is being quoted as a clarification (rather than being charged double.)
  • Well I called BG. Tier two doesnt come in during a weeks usage at all, this is worked out after the first 500kwh of usage per annum.

Thanks anyway, but you were wrong.

...The price of my Electricity is 23pence per KW. Forget 'tier 2' rate of 10p per kw because we all know that doesnt exist ...

If tier 2 doesn't exist for you, have a look at ebico.
All units charges at the same price (an no additional charges like daily standing charges)

Unit prices are a little over half of the tier 1 prices you currently pay.

Are you really sure you don't use any tier 2 units? You must be a really low user.

    Right, ok, here goes

I am on a pre-payment meter and my tariff is Standard.
I h ave used 5000 kwh of electricity in one year, ...

That's well into tier 2 rates. Use a comparison site to find yourself the best deal. :)

Yes, and they are taking off £3.50 every time
Don't you just hate it when a poster doesn't give us all the relevent details from the start?

So you are not paying £15 a week on lecky, but only about £11.50.
That's about correct for an annual 5000kWh consumption.

If you have an outstanding debt on the PPM of over £200, the supplier will refuse to allow you to switch, so don't bother looking at the comparison sites or any other supplier.
(You're on the cheapest generally available tariff for your area using a PPM and the current consumption anyway)

You'll pay the debt repayment wahtever electricity you consume. If you don't regularly top up the meter, then the debt repayments may accrue, which may be why you don't get much leccy for your credit.

One wonders why some people even bother posting here, when they seem to already know the answers (or where to obtain them from).

Anyway, sadly it's you that is wrong, even if its because you were mis-informed.
BG do not charge a standing charge on their electricity PPMs*

The rates for you in your area are (inc VAT)

    Tier 1 (initial 125kWh per quarter): 23.909p
    Tier 2: 10.364p

(The tier1 units are actually averaged out onto a daily basis, but may be re-adjusted slightly if you fail to use the amount in any one day, so as to ensure you are charged the full 500kWh per annum at that rate)

*The no standing charge only applies to customers that have an Actaris KBD meter. If you don't have one, BG will install one for you, usually within 28 days.
If you don't have one, then a 18.58p per day daily standing charge will apply and you will be charged all units at the tier 2 rate.
