Whilst I understand your good intentions, not only here, but around the internet, there would seem to be a view that in a significant number of installations, this product has been the kiss of death. My one and only time use of it meant a complete re-format of my hard drive, the loss of every single byte of my data and re-installing all my software. This does not appear to be a unique experience. Hell will freeze over before I use it again.

It might also be worth mentioning their customer support. If things have gone wrong, they can offer no help at all in putting it right.

Registry Mechanic actually reviews very well, one of the better, or best registry cleaners out there.

I've personally never had any problems with it. I no longer use registry cleaners though. If you're worried about your data (which should be backed up anyway) and your install of Windows, then a registry cleaner is the last thing you want to be using. It's certainly not always the type of tool for someone not overly technical as it can be very easy to remove critical entries.

If you want to keep your install clean, Acronis TrueImage is what you want. v7 was posted on here for free recently. Install everything perfectly, then take an image. If Windows starts to get bogged down, just revert back to the image. Nice and simple.
