RegCleaner is a very good program and is available to download here for free.

A few years ago I would of recommended using a Registry Cleaner of some sort - not any more though. They (imo) lead to more problems - detecting orphanded dependancies in the registry isn't as easy as they sometimes make out, resulting in a corrupted system.

The only "cleaner" program I would ever recommend is CCleaner, which doesn't operate on the registry, but can clean up your system ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ).

Yeah it can, it's under the "Issues" section. Never caused me any problems though.

Registry Mechanic can be a little over zealous as my old man found out to his, and ultimately my, cost. Use with care if you must!

Have used RegCleaner for years without any problems. It automatically creates a backup and can restore any changes that it makes to the system.

Yep, actually just noticed that tab last night - hadn't seen it before. Gave it a spin, it (successfully I might add) detected a few orphaned entries in my registry from when I had moved from .NET 1.1 to .NET 2.0, and cleaned them up. Definately recommend CCleaner :)
