just thought i would update, got the fluval u4 going in the tank with the old filter - they have different types of bio stuff, one is woolly stuff and the U4 has pellets so fish man suggested running them together for a few days untill the U4 is in charge so to speak.
Have also bought an aquarium stand so for the time being all is well, fish look great and have already learned exactly when dinner time is lol!
Tank is crystal clear aswell, new filter is a lot smaller than the old one so more room too.
Once again, thanks for all help:)0 -
That's great to hear ,i have one on order too! When you remove the old filter, replace the carbon inserts on the new one with some of the old filter material that will have the good bacteria on.Feed sparingly for a while or you will get an ammonia spike.0

will do thanks for that0

Hello, back for more advice - sorry to repoen my old thread but thought it best for continuity.
I''ve finally got a new, bigger tank a REKORD 96, 10 quid out the paper - result! Anyway its all shiny and lovely but there is no light in it, and my old one is too small for the tank.
I'm a bit confused as to what I need to get, what wattage (I have live plants which are doing great) and which bulbs etc. I'm looking for a lighting controller aswell (the plug in bit?) as bit confused really...can anyone help? Theres loads on ebay but I'm weary of the hong kong imports, would rather go on a recommendation
If it helps the lid has an enclosed section where I assume the lighting unit once was...
The lid has a section to fit a bulb in but didn't come with anything, can i use the power unit from my old tank to power a new light? I'm still learning all this fish lark
Thanks for any help:o0 -
Oh dear.It is going to cost you a LOT more than the tank itself did.Juwel tanks are different to ordinary ones, because the hood is open to the water and therefore needs the specific correct set up.I have a juwel tank, been going 11 years now but in that time i have had to replace the lighting unit once and the bulbs and end caps about every 18 months to 2 years. The trick is to make sure the end caps are checked regularly and tightened up to keep the lamp waterproof.
Here is what you need http://www.charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk/catalog/juwel-monolux-light-system-rekord-p-553.html
i cannot find much variation in price, unfortunately. Had you bought a tank with a working light unit,it would have saved you about £45.
However,as you don't need the lid itself you may be able to find just a light unit and then buy the bulb separate.i will carry on looking for you.
No it looks as if you can only buy the whole thing. This is by far the cheapest, and no delivery either http://www.gardenandleisure.com/products/wjuw33.html
The only other option you have is to buy a second hand tank(yes, another one!) for less than this, but that has a working light system. For the three fish you have it really needs to be bigger than 96 litres if at all possible.
I'm afraid that fishkeeping, done properly, does not come cheap! I'm about to get my raised pond repaired which is going to be little change out of £1000.0 -
Hi Froglet, don't worry I was expecting to pay about £50 anyway, still saved me loads getting a second hand tank for a tenner so i'm happy to spend some more cash:D
Now I know what i'm looking for I'll be able to shop around,
thanks again!0 -
hmm
been looking around a bit and I'm not convinced the hood is the original monolux one? fits well though. Now it has a section inside the hood with screws that you can open, presumably to put in a light unit so is there anything to stop me putting in something like this light unit ? Presumably this would be nice and dry inside the hood...stop me if I'm wrong though, learning as I go with this!
I'll post a pic later of the hood so you can see what i mean0 -
They could well have changed the hood ,and i see the lighting controller is waterproof.I would always be wary of fitting something non standard but it may well be possible.i would ask the question here of more knowledgable people than me on these things....
http://forum.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=32 and they should be able to confirm if that unit will be ok.It would be a shame to spend out and it go wrong and STILL have to buy the original.0
