Hello all
just got a fish tank and three lovely fantail goldfish, off freecycle, and love it. However I'd like to get a stand for it, all the stands I've had a look at seem to be made for specific makes of tank, I just want a generic one that'll fit my tank! Tank measures L60cm x H40cm x D30cm, can anyone help with suggestions?
I've had fish before but never in such a big tank, I was afraid to put it on the table in case the table gave way lol!

Have you thought about building one out of MDF?
We had a corner tank made that was non-standard in size so I built one out of MDF. It's easy to cut and work with and paint, and it's also incredibly strong if you use a decent thickness.0 -
Yeah that weigh at least 60kg 1l of water near enough weighs one kilogram so your going to need something strudy. PAH do a basic stand that should match that size tank, cant remember the cost but its not expensive.
ebay is another option for cabinets. or build one your self but remember what your supporting.0 -
Hmmm building one is a good idea. Its 72l capacity so at least I could make sure it was sturdy enough. Think this may be a job for the OH....0

Hi pug.i don't want to be a killjoy, but unless the fish are still quite small that tank will not be big enough for them.A fantail goldfish needs 80 litres each when fully grown. You really need a tank twice that size.Sorry! If you take a look here http://forum.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/ you may be able to get some advice on how to keep them healthy until you can get a better size tank.Otherwise they will deteriorate.Do you have a mature filter up and running for them? That will help for now.Ultimately common goldfish are better off in a pond but it is too late at this time of year to get them into one.
A 2ft tank is far better for tropicals that don't grow and are not nearly as messy as goldfish!0 -
no problem at all, but one of the fish is nearly ten years old so I think they've grown as much as they might, hope so anyway !
There are two little ones, one is a black moore I think (black with buggy eyes), not sure about the other will post a pic later on if anyone can help me identify them. The biggest fella is a big one, I was told he was a fantail but I don't think he is as I've had them before and he doesn't look like one at all.
Sorry to appear a bit dim, I've had fish before but not terribly knowledgable about them so you'll have to excuse me
I'd have a bigger tank though, I love them, just find it really relaxing watching them swish round0 -
Ah right. The one with "buggy eyes" is a fancy goldfish and would die in a pond as it cannot withstand winter temperatures.Yes i would be interested to see photos. The trouble is that if they end up stunted through their living conditions ,either poor water quality or just not enough space, they can develop problems internally. The skeleton will be stunted but internally their organs do not stop growing. It sounds as if he has got to 10 years old without too many problems, but if you got him from freecycle he may not have been looked after too well.I know i would NEVER give away my fish!
You can pick up a decent size tank with a stand for quite cheap these days.If you want to do your best for them, and it sounds like you do,so well done, you could always use the smaller tank to branch out into tropicals. They really are easy to keep provided setting up the tank is done properly and is done without fish.0 -
The guy who gave me them said they were giving them away after a close call with their daughter near pulling the tank over. To be honest he seemed gutted! He gave me two massive bags of food, medicine, water cleaner etc aswell as gravel, filter etc, gravel cleaner. He emailed me with some tips aswell so I think it was a genuine give away where he didn't really want to give them away!
Tank is looking great at the moment, although its on my kitchen floor as I'm moving in a few days; luckily only down the road so the fish should be able to stay in the tank to be moved.
In terms of stands am looking at these two:
Marina Style 95 Cabinetand
Elite 95.
Although these are for 95l not 72l like mine, they are the right dimensions and mean I could upgrade if necessary.
Do they look ok do you think?0 -

There are actually three fish, one big fella and two little - but one of the little doesn't like being photographed lol0

The bigger fish is a shubunkin. The second one is a little harder to tell because i can't see it's fin shape but it is obviously a fancy one also. The shubunkin should grow to 10 inches. They look healthy but that tank really is too small.Instead of paying out for a new stand why not look out for a second hand tank and stand that is nearer the 4 ft size .That will give them so much more in terms of space and water quality, and enable you to keep them healthy for a good long time.
Online sites like friday ads, preloved etc have local areas,or why not advertise in the supermarket for a wanted tank. You could use the filter you currently have, then sell the tank to recoup some of the cost.0
