"Taking the measures one at a time, the first – and the biggest – was to "time limit contributory employment and support allowance" for one year, that is the benefit formerly known as incapacity benefit. What this means is that a disabled or seriously sick person who has a working spouse, however low-paid their job may be, will lose their personal entitlement to benefits after a year.
Singles will be able to fall back on a means-tested safety net, but everyone else will be forced to rely on the generosity of their partner. Expect wheelchairs in Downing Street as the coalition does away with the long-established principle that people who have contributed their own national insurance in the past, and then become sick and disabled, should expect a modest stipend from the state in recognition of this."

Is only the DLA Low Rate Mobility being stopped for those in care homes, or for everyone?
None of these changes are going to work - everything is going to go bust big time. The markets will come crashing down soon.0 -

yet another attack on the disabled0 -
Obviously with these cuts I am not going to be able to afford my debt to my creditors, have to tell them to take me to court now, or write it off which they will not do.
I am also going to use families computer so mine can go the internet connection, also TV can go too, so won't have to pay TV Licence. All of what the government have planned is going to have this type of effect, won't be long before businesses, shops, and Phone Companies go down the pan.0 -
What exact cuts have you identified to your benefits that mean you are unable to afford £2 per week for your TV licence, plus pay back the money you owe for goods and services you have enjoyed? There are proposed ones which will not affect all and will not kick in for many claimants for quite a while. If you end up being moved onto JSA from ESA, it's the same money.
Go to the Debt free wanabee board and detail your debts there and they will advise you of your options.
It's good that you are reviewing your budget and identifying potential changes but there's no need to panic and make drastic lifestyle changes ahead of actually finding out the direct impact on you.
Download the budget planner on the Free tools section of this website and work through the site to identify how to reduce your expenses or up your income. Many people use the free internet services provided by local libraries when they want to be ultra frugal.0 -
If I am on High Rate long term IB then surely the cuts will affect me. Even if it is made up with some other benefit if they threw me off IB - which by the way how can they make up the difference to what I am on now as that would mean all that they plan has not made sense.
Been on Incapacity Benefit for 17 years, I am in my 40's. Does the being thrown off benefits after 12 months apply in the future for me.
I am going to have to go to CAB with my debts, and to speak about all of this.
Has all of these new plans been passed in commons yet?0 -
You might get a bit more specific info on your situation in the Disability and Dosh forum.0

yankee....i understand what youre saying, but let's change the circumstances slightly.........
you say you have been on IB for 17 years and are in your 40's..so you must have been on IB for at least half your working life?
other people in your circunmstances may be married, with another wage coming in........ why should someone be entitled to a life long benefit, if there is already sufficient coming into the home? if there isn't sifficient, then income based top ups will still be available.
any disabled people are already entitled to DLA so why do they need a second benefit?
what about people that have never been able to work due to disability? they have to manage without IB if they are with a working partner.
(I myself am registered blind and my partner is expected to keep me........we are a couple so i dont personally see a problem with it)0 -
Don't just go to CAB with your debts, speak to other agencies as well so that you get as many options as possible. If you go on the Debt Free Wannabe board then they'll help you with your finances (I'll be back on there in a few days, I'm just full of cold and have an essay due).
I'm in a similar position to you - Single, on SDA (pre-IB), and DLA, and at the moment the cuts aren't going to affect me, in fact when I'm moved onto ESA they wont affect me as I'm single and don't have savings.
So please don't worry or start taking drastic action.
Also, if you're struggling with debts just remember that they can't have what you don't have, if all you can afford is £1 a month then they'll have to accept that. Again, on DFW there'll be loads of help and advice about it.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
I can tell you now what this is going to create.............................................
Partners who work for minimum wage are all of a sudden going to be out of a job so they can both claim, this whole thing has not been thought out at all still what can you expect from a bunch of public school boys!!"You can measure a man's character by the choices he makes under pressure"Sir Winston Churchill0
