Lpg help!!!!

Hello all,

My partner and I have recently moved into a rented property that runs off LPG.

We had to install a new 47KG flogas cylinder just over a week ago at a cost of just under £100. We use it to heat the house and our hot water.

But after only 10 days it's run out. We haven't had the heating/water on all day, only a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening.

Is this normal? Are we just going to have to face facts that this is an expensive way to heat our house?

I know our boiler does have a "pre-heat" function. Does leaving this on make the gas run out quicker?

I coule really do with some advice!

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks in advance.

£100 for a 47kg propane? Where are you located, the moon? That's a ridiculous price even by Flogas standards, did you pay a deposit included in that?

I assume you have a gas boiler for heating and hot water?

If so you need 4 x 47Kg cylinders, working as pairs with an auto changeover valve/regulator.

Have you got a current copy of a landlord certificate? If not get your landlord to have one done so the gas is checked for leaks.

You need to see if you can get yourself a bulk tank, running lpg heating off bottles may be ok for a caravan / park home but it's not a long term solution for a domestic property.

Sorry just noticed it's rented.....yes, very expensive way to heat the house!
  • Thanks for the messages.

We paid £70.49 for the gas and £30 for what's described as "new gas bottle charge". Is that really a deposit so we'll get it back?

From looking on the internet and from replies here I guess we need more than one each time (as advised by our landlord!) for cheapest and most efficient way of doing this. (we cant get a bulk tank due to size of property.

What i really need to know is how long each tank should generally last. For the past ten days we've used on average 5/6 hours heating both our home and water. With this our tank lasted 10 days. Is this about right, or could there be a leak somewhere?

We had someone come out and check the system only a week ago and he gave us a landlord certificate.

Thanks for all the advice so far, keep it coming!

As gas4your stated you should have 4 x 47Kg cylinders, working as pairs with an auto changeover valve/regulator. We have our heating/water provided by 47kg cylinders also. I can't tell you how muc we will use this year as we have been rebuilding and making the house much better insulated! But last year (in a very badly insulated place) in the very cold weather we would average two 47kg tanks a month, BUT we never had the heating on for anywhere near 5 hours even in the cold, we made do we extra layers! But you are paying far too much for your gas we pay £42 per tank (if we buy more than one) so you need to phone around and get some quotes.

we have a bulk tank and it costs around 2 60 per 2 months in winter and thats with heatung on about 4 hours per day. LPG should be 2 tier 1 for cars and 1 for houses. its bloomin shocking how much it costs
  • Need to ring around for some quotes from different companies - countrywide are cheaper than that in the south.
Have a look on http://www.uklpg.org/ to find out who supply LPG in your area, then use that company's site to find local dealers and ask how much their cylinders are.

To change, you will have to return the bottles to flogas and get the deposit back, then give the deposit for the cylinders for the new supplier. Might need to talk to your landlord about that.

From looking around myself, FloGas and Calor are the most expensive. Just try and find what's out there are who will deliver to you.
