Warm Air Heating

Hello
My first post and it is asking for some help please
I moved into a new rental house a few months ago and it has this strange warm air heating system. (strange to me anyway!)
there is a boiler that sits in a chimney breast and it gets hot and the air that heats around it goes out of the 3 vents at the top. I understand the basic idea of it all.
The hot air then circulates around the house and upstiars (I have issues with getting heat into the bedrooms as I need to keep the doors closed at night so have bought 2 oil filled radiators.
so my questions...
The vents are at the top near the ceiling in the kitchen and living room (there are ones at the floor level but guess they are for air coming in) you can open and close the top vents, should I be changing the angle to better heat the downstairs?
When I have googled about the system they keep referring to a filter but I think this is for more modern systems?
Any tips for using mine? It has a dial control linked to a basic wire thermostat attached to one of the bottom vents.
Thanks in advance
