O2 mobile text verification code?

My wife has just begun a new 12 month contract and has received her username and password to sign into her account online,she was told she will receive by text a verification code and to input this into her online account when prompted.The problem is she has been sent 6 different codes and none of them work,what is this code for and is it important to input it.

I think it's just a security proceedure - they send a verification code to her mobile to confirm that she is indeed the account holder (and in possession of the phone). Otherwise they could be giving anybody access to her account details and billing information.
It's fairly standard O2 proceedure - they often text you a verification code if you are requesting to access/change something online. If she can't get it to work, i'd suggest calling customer services.0
