We all enjoy baiting Graham when he's been a "bit daft" on something, (sorry Graham),(and ok, not all of us, but plenty of us), but you seem to have moved into downright hostility and vitriol.
Have a break please mate.
I was just thinking the same. A bit of banter is all well and good (see some of my posts for examples of this), but calling someone a "moron" is a bit much, IMHO.30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.0 -
If the only debt you have is a mortgage then 4 x joint is EASY to afford.
4 x as a singleton is more difficult as you have to keep the family going and pay the way, and all on your lonesome.
If I was a lender, id prefer 4xjoint rather than 4x single... the fact is things have changed, family members both work now! Its not ... husband working and wife staying at home any more... They realise, the women, that as mush as they choose a career to spend time with their kids, they need to work too, for their own independance.
My gf, wants to continue working when we have kids, thats dedication for you, she also said she would like 12 months away from work before she goes back, which I duly support! I even supoported her going back part time.
But we have the luxury of a mortgage of only 3x's my single income. This is a positive position to be in!Plan

I'll tell you what lax lending is, it's banks lending 4x joint salaries, which some turkey that someone was talking about on here 2 days ago took out. So in some ways it's still happening.
Banks should self regulate or be forced to stick to 2.5 joint as a max, let prices fall, then the market can recover, future mortgage debt can be reduced, leaving people more money to spend in the economy along without the threat of repossession if base rate should rise.
Why do you need an arbitary multiplier? Hell, I had a multiplier of 2.9 (now 2.6) on a single income when I bought which I suspect would rule me out under your rules depsite me being in a stable job with a good salary.0 -
Massive fall on LR.:eek:0

Well we'll disagree there. Like chucky says I'm sure he's heard worse. I was trying to get across that his tone had changed somewhat.0 -

In all honesty, it's only worth it if she's on a very good salary, or if she's happy to go to work purely to pay for childcare.
This is one of the big problems with offering 4,5,6x mortgages to a couple who are likely to have kids.
It's all well and good if they both stay in work, no illness at all, and no kids. But I've seen it happen myself. Not only to my parents, but also people I know. Loss of a job, or an illness, and on top of those worries, you find yourself unable to afford your home, as you were reliant on two incomes. My parents were fine, until my dad was struck out of the blue with a disability.0 -
