Untidy house = major stress

  • And it has not occurred to you that with your Estate Agent hat on, you only get to see houses which are intended to impress?

Don't be so hard on yourself.

I am incredibly hard on myself and this has only got worse since I've been more stressed at work. I keep seeing these amazing houses and comparing mine to theirs, it's driving me insane!
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

  • Just wanted to say huge THANKS to everyone that has posted, it's given me a few ideas of how to tackle this. I think the first two things I'm going to do is book a day off and get organised and then see if I can afford a cleaner for a while.

Ok, first off lets tackle the laundry.

You mention things have been like this for a couple of months. Am I right in thinking then that some of the offending laundry may be fit for summer wear only?

    Do this:

Get a bin bag and put in any summer clothes - put them in the bag. They can be dealt with at another time. No point in stressing over clothes you aren't going to wear for at least 6 months. Put them in the loft or something in the meantime.

Can I suggest you wash the summer stuff before bunging it away for 6 months?. Unwashed clothing over that period of time is likely to develop into unremovable filth - you may as well chuck the stuff in the bin now for all the use you'll make of it in the future!

We keep some washed but unironed stuff in a suitcase in the loft over winter.

I designate another room in the house as the 'Eeek!' room, and just dump all the washing/rubbish/mess in that room and shut the door!

    :rotfl:

All of our rooms are Eeeek rooms, with possibly the exception of the bathroom. :o

We will be doing a MAJOR declutter when we move to the house that's being renovated. I suspect it'll take us over a year.

This made me laugh - one day :rotfl:

I'd need a month, a couple of skips and Kim & Aggie locked in the house to get my place sorted :eek::o:o:o:D

My daughter puts all of her clean washing away un-ironed and then irons what needs to be ironed on a day to day basis. I must admit it seemed very strange to old fashioned me, but, she reasons that shenever has piles of ironing lying around and also perfectly ironed clothes can get creased in drawers etc. So maybe that strategy may help you with the unsightly ironing piles?

I am also a very firm believer in using small snatches of time to do little jobs. Waiting for the kettle to boil? Clean the sink or put three things away in their proper place. Make use of the advert time on the telly to load/unload the washing machine or any other small job. It is amazing what you can do in two or three minutes.

I would also second the idea of having one tidy room I would make it your bedroom as I think it is better to sleep where you are not reminded of all the things you have to do.

Try not to worry there really are worse things than an untidy house. I remember reading a quote from a bereaved mother, many years ago. She said she would give anything to see her sons dirty football kit lying in the hallway and his dirty fingerprints on the window. I always tried to remember that when my house was in a tip when my family were growing up.

  • Just wanted to say your not alone in feeling like this, i feel the same!

FIRSTLY..get yourself a haven, one room thats tidy enough for you to chill out in, ours is the living room for some its the bedroom.

Ive just ( im 2 days in ) started to try and get my house in order.
I' ve started in the kitchen,
i have a washing trunk that was overflowing, its still full now but not over flowing, i cant wash it all in one day because i cant dry it all, so im just doing one or two loads and getting this dry before doing another. I have 2 airers in the kitchen.
In the same vain, im not ironing, never have tbh, all of us have drawers so i dont really see the point, we just iron as we wear.
What i do now is once its dry i fold and put it away straight away, rather than fold into the "clean" washing basket, where it could stay for..... well lets just say FAR to long!

The washing saga was a big problem for me, two teenage girls generate an unbelievable amount of washing.
One tip ive put in place ( from the OS board ) is to actually check that the girls stuff needs washing i.e a pair of jeans worn for one evening are not dirty, so these get folded as if they have been washed and the girls are non the wiser ;)

I think a great why to start is doing small things so it does'nt get any worse, wash dishes as you use them, not leaving them to pile up over the day for example, whilst you've got your hands wet might aswel give something a wipe over, work tops, window sill, cupboards ect.

Invest some time each day into doing a few bits that you have been putting off, You'll soon be on track and feeling back in control:)

Big hugs ~ Get a plan, and get started, you'll feel better for it :j
