HSBC is one of the worst banks for students, dont know how many times I've had fraud on my card, they didnt seem that bothered as it wasnt a large amount ( about 80 pound) luckily I didnt desperately need the money at the time- but it could of easily been the last couple of pounds I had in the world...

When you join they give the dumbest gifts of free cd's instead of wise gifts like free rail or coach cards like Natwest or offer to buy your course books.

The railcard thing is obviously something that is tended for. When I started uni in 98 HSBC had the railcard deal and as it lasted 4 years I saved hundreds of pounds just going home once a term and at beginining and end.

When I started my current degree (in 2004) HSBC gave me the 5 year rail card, even though I didn't qualify for it. GIven my placements can be in London or anywhere in Essex, it's a Godsend!

I don't think you can blame HSBC at all for his death though; okay, the banks aren't our favourite places in the world, but the article (only very briefly) touches on the fact he suffered from depression and practiced self harm since his GCSE's. Many people who suffer from depression attempt suicide at some point; not just because a bank has taken away an overdraft facility

Most (if not all) University departments should have some sort of financial aid office which would have given a loan for his circumstances.

It's easy to blame HSBC but there was clearly something else apart from the overdraft issue. And I was very surprised that his mother works for a different bank but wasn't able to help given what should be her intricate knowledge of the system. It really doesn't say much for her (or the parents) and who knows if that was a contributing factor that maybe tipped him over the edge?

The whole story just doesn't seem right. Maybe it's because I've had too much to drink and it's 2am :o :rotfl:

It is such a shame to see, one of my ex BFs hung himself, and the pain of someone commiting suicide doesnt go.

But i agree with you crabman, think there may have been something else too it as well.

I'm sorry to hear that :( it's such a shame because even if they feel useless there are plenty of things one can do with a life, so many things to make you feel happy or make others happy by helping out in places, doing good.

Some people do get awfully depressed over little insignificant things unforunately such as bf/gf leaving etc. Having said that in this case I don't think HSBC helped the situation by bombarding him with calls  They have way too many departments even for staff to comprehend :naughty: let alone their customers.

I hear ya, i think HSBC and any other banks need to maybe look at what they ask of people and remember we are only human
