Carpet Fitters - disposing of their rubbish?

Just had a housefull of carpet laid, seem to have done a good job.

On he way out, I pointed at the pile if rubbish (off-cuts of carpet, underlay, wrappers, carpet roll tubes etc - all their stuff, we had aleafy disposed of old carpets...) and asked if they were taking it with them. They said "oh no, you have to ask for disposal of that at the time of booking and pay extra for it". They also sited that they only brought the car today - so nowhere to put it. They brought the van yesterday. Was supposed to be a one day job: if they had finished in the planned day, they would have still had the van (and been able to dispose of it.. theoretically...).

So we are moving in day after tomorrow and have a fairly large amount of carpet debris next to the front door... Doesn't seem quite right that they don't dispose of the rubbish that they have created.

Husband is contacting the supplier to see if he can get them to come and take it away... Is that reasonable (180sqm/6.5k value)

I think you'll find it's your rubbish as you purchased the carpet and underlay!

for a 6500 quid order, they had better take the old stuff away from my house!

On thinking about it I'd use the off cuts to protect the new carpet whilst you move in.

It's standard practice for the householder to dispose of it, annoying though that might be. You should be able to dispose of it in your normal bin collection (though maybe not in one go).

Thanks guys, I am amazed... Although this is only the second time I have had it done and, for whatever reason, the first time they took all the rubbish with them.

We will keep the sizeable cuts, but - in addition to that - there is a lot of rubbish.... Frustrating because, with the amount going on at the moment, we would have happily paid extra for them to take it away (if we had known it was an option)

The bin men will take it? If maybe we put it out one bag at a time? Would be surprised with our bin men.... :-(

Yes, to be fair, it would have been haggled into the price of the order.... IF we had known that it wasn't standard practice....

I was talking to the fitters and they did keep saying how it was a small house for them to do (carpeted areas only bring 180sam)

Ours left their wrappers/coke cans from dinner time, used glue gun cartridges, empty sundry boxes (looked like stuff from other jobs too) AND charged up their mobile phones too!

    Bl88dy cheek!

Its all to do with cost rather than service now, the more they can leave at the customers house, the less they have to dispose of at the shop, and companies are now under more pressure to produce less waste etc.

You would think for such a large customer order like yours that they would have made an effort though!

I've just had a new staircarpet fitted (local firm) and when they came to measure up I asked them to take the old carpet up and dispose of it. The carpet fitter did this, and took all the offcuts I didn't want and it cost an extra £20. He told me that they had to pay to take it to the tip, but I thought it was very reasonable.A bit late for OP, but it would pay to request this at the time of purchase.

Seems reasonable to me. I take it to the waste site . no problems but if the carpet fitters turn up in a van , its trade waste and they get charged.
So ask them to get rid of the off cuts but expect to pay .

Thanks very - yes it was definitely not knowing that it wasn't included that was the problem: we would have happily paid/haggled for them to take it away...

However, we have been very lucky: some of our builders were back onsite today and happily offered to take it for us (they were already disposing of some things for us. Really great guys.
