Just as a matter of interest, do you think Sky would actually survive without its football 'rights'...?0

Virtually everyone has said that there is something they like on the BBC and the rest is a waste of the airwaves. Each person seems to have a different oppinoion on what they consider good. Someone mentioned the childrens TV, someone else BBC4 documentaries a few people have talked about sports or drama. THIS IS THE POINT OF THE BBC!!!!
Good point. I can't think of much more painful things in life than listening to the banal, idiotic, pointless, waste of space that is Radio 1. But then 8 million or so people (I'm led to believe) seem to disagree with me so I'm more than happy with it existing.0 -

I don't see many people spending £60 a month just to watch Ross Kemp talk about a gang and then spend an hour viewing animals falling off skateboards.0 -

I have SKY, but pretty much only watch the football. On the rare times I have watched SKY1 it tends to always be 'Animals Do The Funniest Things' or 'Animals Do The Craziest Things' or 'Pets Do Something F*cking Mental'.Graham_Devon wrote: »Oh, and quality Sky material.... An Idiot Abroad
I have to say that I don't find Gervais or Karl Pilkington very funny, but the people I know who do say that this was very good.
I'm not really anti-SKY or anything, I just can't really think of anything I watch on there. And have they actually produced anyone of note or talent? Not just bought them, but actually spotted and developed potential talent in to stars? Talking of Ricky Gervais, C4 obviously gave him a chance, then the BBC were brave enough to give him a show. Have SKY done that with anyone? I think they have obviously been very clever and innovative with the footie, but have they with any specific people, or concepts?0 -

Hmm... yes... that's how I see it.
I can remember that prat Andrew Neil spouting off at Murdoch's behest on Newsnight many moons ago as to how the advent of Sky and its buying up of the soul of English football would both bring rejuvenation to the fortunes of the England national team and herald in an era of wonderful 'choice' for viewers...
How would you say we should measure Sky's success, using those yardsticks..?0 -

'Ross Kemp on Gangs' is pretty good.0 -

I do think Sky is changing. Sky News feels like it has moved subtly to the right, something I don't like.
Sky Arts is very good at broadcasting concerts in full. If I look at C4 or the Beeb, they only show very popular concerts. Sky has started showing some really good music from festivals and also concerts (past and current) by some really interesting artists. I think they are working hard to develop this niche. Also on Sky Arts they spend much more time on books than any of the mainstream channels.
Going back to the commissioning of works by British Authors, yes channels have done this for a while - Lynda La Plante, for example, but I do see this as a shift in Sky's vision as a platform. They will doubtless commission the content rather than making it, but it is good news. The public gets good British drama again - something that is lacking compared to the 70s and 80s - and is good news for British Authors who can make a lot more money out of a TV tie in.
I don't see that it's a case of 'Sky Bad, BBC Good' or vice versa, I think its more a case of living in a multi-channel environment and having a choice we could only have dreamt of in times gone by. The downside of that is that there is a lot of !!!! as well.
Personally I watch TV across the channel spectrum, a lot of BBC 2, quite a bit of BBC 1, a bit of C4, not much ITV and a lot of the more serious programming on Sky and there's good and bad on all of it. Maybe the BBC needs Sky so it doesn't rest on its laurels and Sky needs to BBC to have a quality competitor to force it to raise its game. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I love BBC radio 4 comedies.
Some of the best comedy seen on BBC tv started life on radio, and sometimes it was just as enjoyable on radio.
If the BBC were to fade and Sky take it's place would it seek to fill in the radio gaps left behind? I don't think so because they wouldn't see the direct commercial return.0 -
Indeed, ITV seems to have dropped out of the reckoning. Perversely - and whilst always having considered it a populist, dumbed down channel - I almost feel sad! Maybe my mid-evening vino is getting the better of me.
Ah, Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Bring back the Tiller girls and revolving stage....0
