https://www.call18185.co.uk is 5p per minute through the week but only 2p per minute at the w/end whereas Discount Dial is still 5p per minute0

Clever Rates: 0844 566 3 566
The above access number allows you to call all UK mobiles for as little as 5p per minute from a landline. However, if you use a pay as you go phone or pay monthly plan but have used up all your minutes, then you can call mobiles on other networks at a cheaper rate.
Orange:
Up to 40p per minute. If you use the 0844-discount dial service it will only cost 25p per minute.
Virgin Mobile:
Up to 35p per minute, using 0844-discount dial will only cost 15p per minute from Virgin Mobiles.
Hutchison 3G:
Up to 30p per minute on wepay. Using 0844-discount dial will only cost 15p per minute.

You pay for the call as soon as you hit the recorded announcement when you call 0844 numbers ,so you pay even if you dont get through . Where as you dont on 18185.;) 1899/18185 etc can also be used from contract and payg phones ,via their 020 access numbers.Depending on length of call, charge to call 020 numbers etc this can be cheaper then using 0844 access and the line quality is better.;)0 -

Thanks telecomsavings for above.I didn't think about using 0844 from mobile.
But can anyone explain how the price works.I have PAYG Orange ( bought for tenner last New Year from CPW) am on old tariff (I think) "same rates 24/7" aka "any time"
I made a call to mobile, to test, for a few seconds and got charged a total of 25p via DiscountDial 5ppm.
How can this be. Current Orange rates to 0844 are themselves 25ppm. (plus the 5ppm discountdial charge) My old rate to 01/02 are 15ppm ? dont know what the old "same rate 24/7 " rate to an 0844 no is. Orange refuse to answer my email.
As a result am a bit nervous to use and will stick to 1899 .
Is 25ppm right. Cannot believe it.

Alan99.
Their is no cheap way of calling mobiles via Orange Payg Tariff,
Own network is 20p a min.
X-Network is 40p a min.
X-network via 0844 gateway number is 25p a minute.
You personally dont pay anything to the 0844 supplier it all goes to Orange. ( The 5p announcement is only what you would pay to BT from a landline).
The cheapest overall Payg supplier of X-Net calls is T-Mob. 12p a minute.
Virgin is also good. Own Network 3p a min. X-Net Peak and Evenings via 0844/0871 gateway number 15p a min .Weekends via 18185, 020 access number after first 5 minutes. 5p a minute to virgin,plus 2p a minute to 18185 = 7p a min,+4p connection.0 -
I've been using 18185 for some months now and for the first time I have scrutnised the itemisation history.
I am being charged 9p min call charge when calling a mobile during weekdays - not very good value? I guess this is 4p connection fee and 5p for up to a minute's use. This also suggests that they aren't using per-second charging?0 -

Where else can you get better value then from a BT Landline?
18185 clearly state on their site.
"Rates are in pence per minute. Calls are billed per minute rounded to the nearest penny, include 17,5% VAT and are subject to change. Calls are subject to a 4p connection fee."0 -
Well, for mobile calls placed that are going to voicemail or are very short, I'd say I'd get better value by calling from my mobile phone.
I'm not suggesting that 18185 are necessarily trying to swindle anyone - just that a 9p charge for a 1sec (or whatever) call to a mobile is not great value. I was not aware that they didn't 'do' per-second billing, so for confirming that suspicion, I thank you.0 -

Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
