shoddy paint job on my car......

Options
Hi, i had a car crash in about March this year, crashed head on into a bus and broke my front bumber and headlights etc.

i got a new bumper from a scrappy and took it to the local garage to be sprayed blue (to match my car) and to be fitted with the lights etc.....
From day one we have had problems, the lights are un-aligned, and the paint started chipping off the bumper. we took it back, and it was re done, it was fine for about 3 days and the paint chipped off again, we took it back and it was sprayed again. He says the reason the paint wont stick is becuase at some point the bumper has been `back to blacked`.

So the paint has chipped AGAIN so it is in the garage today (after numerous phone calls and them fobbing me off since August)
They told me that after all the problems i was having they were going to buy a new bumper and spray it, he obviously didnt tell his wife this, as she just called me to tell me i can pick it up tomoz and let it slip they are re-spraying my bumper AGAIN!!!
i paid £350 for the bumper to be sprayed and have had nothing but problems! what should i do, i have started getting very ratty with them!!???
HELP!

  • Sorry i have thanked you by mistake!!while trying to reply,i think it is the responsibility of the sprayer to make sure he carries out this work properly.

I can see the problem he has had,it is not as easy to spray plastic as metal and it needs proper preparation. However if this person is a professional sprayer,he will know this and should be more than capable of putting it right.

Insist he does the job right this time,i think you have every right to be annoyed, and now he seems to be telling you lies too!!If all else fails demand a refund and go elswhere.

Unfortunately without having a full (and honest) account of the initial estimate conversation it is difficult really to give any opinion.... did they comment at all on the work that needed to be done? did they say it needed more than you agreed to pay for? did they tell you that there may be issues on not going a full prep?

  • All this fixing he is doing is going to be free. which is good but im reluctant to be grateful for something that is his fault in the first place.
i stupidly let on to the garage that i might be selling it so the wife told me earlier
"what we are going to do will last a month or so, so if u have sold it it wont then be ure problem"
so they are blatantly doing half assed work!

i do understand this but he shouldnt have taken the job on if he wasnt sure he could do it, the bumper doesnt even look primed or sanded down. its still textured and where it has chipped it still black underneath. i thought primer was grey colour and they would have to sand it right down, but thats just what i thought.
since i wrote my last post my dad (after hearing what she said to me on the phone) has phoned them and had a right go, and told them its not on, but i dont hold out hope of it being done properly.
BTW i paid £350 for the bumper to be fitted and sprayed and lights aligned. and that was the final quote, no further work mentioned.
  • I said it was more difficult as a matter of interest,i say again it is his problem to put it right,i would accept nothing less.

I assume this means it's been covered with Simoniz Back To Black or similar, so they are saying this makes it unsuitable for paint adhesion.

It does cause a lot of problems.
    Happy chappy
  • My issue is now why he is lying to me.
i am due to pick the car up tonight so i will see what it looks like then, we could tell last time just by looking at it that it wasnt going to last.

If it doesnt work this time i dont know what i should do.
is there not something that takes off back to black? and shouldnt they be sanding it down first to make it smooth, that would get rid of it wouldnt it?

My brother is a sprayer. He had a bumper once that had been "back to blacked" and he was moaning about it lol. It is VERY hard to remove all of that stuff, and it all needs to be removed so theres any chance of adhesion to the plastic. Then it needs to be rubbed down and primered, before the colour and laquer is applied.
The bumper is probably primered, but as it's the primer that won't be sticking to the bumper, it'll be coming off with the paint, so will look like there isn't any.

Is it actually possible to sand?
Sounds like it would be a lot of work to sand a whole bumper smooth, more so to remove anything that’s been applied to it – even if it is possible?

Don’t think they would do this unless you asked them to and they’d charge for the time.

If you just asked for it to be painted then they’d do just that.

What sort of car is it – if you’re selling it would two black bumpers look OK?
  • Its a paugeot 306 XSI, and a little boy racer owned it before me and had all the black trim sprayed blue. the bumper that was on it before (that smashed to bits when i crashed it) was sprayed blue, and the back bumper is blue, wing mirrors, spoiler, side trims etc. so if i had a black bumper on the front it would look a bit odd i think.
all i asked him to do was re spray it blue and he quoted me the price and i payed it. my fellas dad used to be a sprayer and he said something about sanding bumpers down to get the paint to stick or something. i can see the bloke has attempted to do this as in some places the tiny bumps on the bumper are there and some places they arent.
im due to be picking it up tonight so i hope all is ok. i will be straight back up there if it isnt.
