The car being driven and its value is insignificant in determining the premium - what drives the premiums up is the damage that can be done to other cars and their occupants and pedestrians, etc, by inexperienced over confident drivers.
Well yes, or middle aged people who grew up in times when drinking and driving was less frowned upon..and who don't think they can possibly be affected by their gins and tonics/wine with meal etc... (or in the case of my father who was disabled by car crash with a drunk solicitor driving home after a boozy session in the golf club. My dad never worked again; he was in his 50's and had worked since he was 13. This was in the 70's. The solicitor was fined £10, probably less than the price of his bar tab at the golf club)
But the value of the car does affect some insurances it seems, though there's nothing I can do about this. I just want him to be an effective member of our family who can help out with driving duties now and again and have driving as a skill to put on his cv.
I guess I'll just wait til he passes and see what the actual prices are then. We will try to afford it though he will understand if it's completely beyond the family budget
Thanks for all your advice0 -
You won it?! Wow that's quite a prize.
I won a £10,000 shopping spree which I could spend on anything I could access from a BBC website. So through Top Gear I got to a 2nd hand car dealer, bought a 2 year old Nissan for me and a Toyota something or other for my husband. This took up most of my money but you had to spend the prize on line and you would not get change if you spent less than £10,000 so I also got garden furniture, new food processor, some computer games for children (in true MSE style I kept those back for birthdays) and when i was left with about £3.99, I even ordered some batteries to get to £9999 spent. Oh, it was great fun :T Happy days!0 -
We put our son, when he was still learning, onto our insurance and for a 1.4 citroen c3 it cost an extra £1000.
Fortunately it didn't increase when he passed 3 weeks ago.
Personally I think I would have spend more on lessons had he not been able to practice in the car.2014 Target;

Personally, I don't think CIS are cheap, I was with them once years back and haven't ever gone back.
They always offer me a policy £200-£400 more than elsewhere, a complete and utter rip-off.
Also, I'm not sticking up for the government, but it's not there fault it's that price for insurance to young drivers, it's because of most of the youngsters driving manner, therefore they are considered high risk and one rule for them, must apply to everyone, they state, even if that seems unfair!0 -
Personally, I think insurance is a racket. Premiums could be smaller and be whacked up if a claim is made. I know we all pay higher premiums for uninsured drivers, but I can't help but believe that there would be less of them if insurance were more accessible.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Car insurance is easily accessed...you just have to pay for it!0

Insurance IS a complete rip off, FACT.
I hate paying it but it's something we ALL MUST do, if you can't afford it,. you can't afford to runa car, FACT.
Insurance is so high due to loads of uninsured drivers on the roads, young drivers who drive like planks and increasing amount of fraud claims being made plus tax, FACT.0 -
Admiral group (Admiral, Elephant, Bell, etc) are good on quotes for young people usually. They always quote me a lot less than the next quote.0
