To be honest thats quiet cheap my stepson was quoted over 2k on a similar car he now has a 125 motor bike and love it
and dont bank on it getting cheaper in the second year im 36 and my insurance went up and i have full licence and full no claims
the reason the insurance is so high is cos they dont want to insure them kid especially boys are seen as high risk so the high premiums are there to put them off and it dose seem to work maybe not fair but thats the way it is and its gone up loads in the past six months
Young Marmalade use to do a great deal of around 900 -1400 depending on location for a kids of 18 years old with a pass plus they would put a tracker on the car so they cant drive it between 11pm and 5am
lots of my stepsons friends had this insurnance last year but cant afford it now so selling the cars for next to nothing
last year my stepson was going to go for this but by the time he passed his test 3 months ago it had gone up to over 2k and he is a sensible kid working part time and at uni so his dad told him he couldnt afford it and to wait untill he got a full time job or walk
i would tell him that he/you cant afford it and to consider other options
in my opinion 1800 on a car worth 500 is serious bad money saving and not really worth even considering also you have to be able to run the car service it mot it tax it as well0 -

In year 2 he'll have around 40% NCB that he doesnt have just now.
He'll also have held his licence for a year which is also a help.
It may also open up other insurers that wont quote in his first year.0 -

I can see the point about it not being worth it but I thought I was doing a good thing, encouraging him to learn to drive as I see it as a life skill. I don't like the idea of him having a licence and then not being able to build up his experience.
And it's not like I am intending to buy him a car to race around in. It's my car; he will just have occasional use so no running costs. He is a good kid, no job because he needs to concentrate on his A levels cos he is finding them (Maths, Physics etc) hard going and really it is my fault for creating this expectation. My brother in NI insured his daughter some months ago for £800 when she was 18 and it was that sort of price when I enquired last year - I just had no idea of how much it had gone up by. And Marmalade quoted me £3,362!0 -

Im 22, my insurance premium history is £1200 (17 1.4 Corsa), £800 (18 1.4 Corsa), £600 (19 1.4 Corsa), £500 (20 1.8 Ford Escort), £450 (21 2.0d Astra) and then renewal today has come out at £415 at Admiral for 5 years NCB.
Thanks for that info. At least I can see your premiums came down. You obviously drove with great care for the last 5 years!0 -

Well, Worried Jim, I obviously can't guarantee that he won't but he is regarded jealously as a paragon of virtue by all who know him, maddeningly so sometimes!!:p0 -

Have you considered pay as you drive insurance such as offered by Coverbox? This was pioneered by Norwich Union a few years ago.
http://www.coverbox.co.uk/index.php
Mileage is tracked via a GPS device installed (for free) in your vehicle and costs vary according to the hour of day you travel. For under 23s there are 'super peak times' Fri, Sat, Sun night / mornings (highest risk times for young drivers) which if avoided should mean cheaper insurance costs. Worth a look?
Not sure if search engines pick this company up.0 -
Thans for that. Just tried it but it rejected my beloved car on grounds of its age! Poor old thing. I love that car; I won it off the internet in 2000 and it has been a faithful work horse ever since :-). But I am getting an inferiority complex on its behalf now!0

The car being driven and its value is insignificant in determining the premium - what drives the premiums up is the damage that can be done to other cars and their occupants and pedestrians, etc, by inexperienced over confident drivers.0

You won it?! Wow that's quite a prize.Thans for that. Just tried it but it rejected my beloved car on grounds of its age! Poor old thing.
