Voluntary schemes have already been used across many spending depts. with peeps going by 22 Oct.

I expect the 490,000 was in addition to those already going.

Lot's of peeps will be cursing the day they saw the Guardian advert for Lesbian Movement & Dance Outreach Co-Oridinator instead of getting a proper job packing widgets in t'mill.

A few LAs that I have knowledge of are registering interest in VR packages phased in across next 6 -24 months.

Putting aside the whys and wherefores of how the "cull" will be undertaken, which is very well covered earlier in this thread, I find it incredible (well, maybe not) that Danny Alexander felt justified in posing for the photo opportunity with the document open at "random" to reveal probably the most contentious and alarming of cuts.

It's obviously just a paper exercise for him and his equally arrogant cronies, and he is completely incapable of recognising that those 490,000 jobs represent 490,000 employees and their dependants. I know the info will be made public tomorrow, but anyone from the public sector reading it this morning must have felt it like a kick in the guts.

What sort of man is he ?

What sort of man is he ?

Do you think 1 day will make much difference?

Did you think, after the media blitzkreig of the last 6 months, anyone's blissfully unaware of the current financial situation?

Do you think 490000 employees will be given their P45s tomorrow or will a significant number of these result from 'natural wastage' over the next 4 years resulting in a lot fewer compulsary redundancies than is being shown in the headlines?

I know of quite a few Local Govt employees in mid-late 50's who are quite happily currently looking at early retirement VR packages (my partner being one of them).

What sort of man is he ? - Dunno, what are the options?
  • Isn't culling them a bit harsh? Do they have foot and mouth or something? Could we not introduce some natural predators to keep numbers down?
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.
    Bo Jackson
  • It is 490,000 over 4-5 years , ie until 2014-15, almost 1 million jobs went in the private sector in little over 12 months, now that's what i call savage.

    Like the Conservatives :rotfl:

Obviously not, but it's the principle; to him it's just figures on a piece of paper that he uses as a dramatic prop for a "photo bit"

No, you got me there. I didn't say anything about that though

So ? I don't know what point of mine this is aimed at ?

Lucky them, Danny boy is obviously doing them a favour, no wonder you are so dismissive of my comments. I hope you'll live very comfortably off the pension.

I couldn't possibly spell them out on this forum.
