Sell or keep? Kick up the backside needed I think

OK, for my wedding in February I bought the most beautiful pair of shoes I've ever seen. They cost me £200 from LK Bennett (yes I know... this was before my LBM... now you see why I'm in such a mess)
Now do I keep them or do I sell them? I'm still in love with these shoes but realistically I'll only get them out of the box to look at them and can't imagine wearing them again. I only wore them once but they're quite mucky as it was dusty where we got married so I can't imagine I'll get anywhere near what I paid for them.
I also have 2 items of Cornish pottery which will probably fetch about £20 each. Also some beautiful & expensive hardback household-type books which look gorgeous on my bookshelf. Again, I love these possessions dearly but is it really worth hanging onto lovely things when altogether they could make a significant dent in my huge debt

Personally, Im not someone who gets "into" possessions. However, Theres only one thing that I hope to god I'll never have to sell, and thats an original Cuban revolution sticker book, a gift. God knows what its worth but if I was offered 2k for it, Id turn it down, maybe even 10k Id turn down. I really do value this item above money.
A book that looks good on a bookshelf, or a pair of shoes that barely ever leaves the box, its a no-brainer for me, just sell them.
You do have a pretty hefty debt there, and my personal feeling is, yes these trinkets are whats got you here. and they can help you get out. Holding onto luxurious but ultimately *worthless* possessions (in the way that if you dont wear the shoes, whats the point of em?) is keeping you in this silly state of mind of accumulation for no point- I think once I broke the back of that thought process of having "stuff" being an intrinsically *good* thing, was what really has started bringing my debt down more quickly.
Good luck whatever you decide but consider this a kick up the rump from me. GET RID:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I'm not so sure about this - I'm all for getting rid of stuff you have no attachment to, or that you never use. But is it really worth selling them? Getting £40 for a couple of pieces of pottery is not going to make a significant dent in your £25K debt.....and I'm guessing they cost you an awful lot more to buy in the first place. And how much are you realistically going to get for the shoes if they're dusty and dirty? I think people are sometimes a bit too hasty to sell things at a pittance.0

You probably know what I'm going to say seeing as I've bitten the bullet and listed my wedding dress - go for it. Even my beloved horse had to go (and I miss him dreadfully and definitely can't replace him). I'm going to have a mad amazon session when I get some time, to hopefully slim down my book shelves and make some money. Everything that doesn't move goes, and even some things that do. Makesure you have a nice spreadsheet set up though that you can enter the profit in on so you can see how much of a difference it makes to your dfd.Debts @ lightbulb moment (13/06/2006) - £59,842.23  All commercial debts now clear!!! :T Debts April - £20,000 to family (incl extra £10k borrowed for house deposit). I won't sell things that I'd lose money on - but I have sold an awful lot, a few 20 quids here and there soon add up to a few hundreds here and there. And when you have a debt the size we do, every little helps.Debts @ lightbulb moment (13/06/2006) - £59,842.23  All commercial debts now clear!!! :T Debts April - £20,000 to family (incl extra £10k borrowed for house deposit). afternoon!
id say, if youll get a good ish price for them, do it. if not, you might as well keep them... thats what id do!
good luck!!0 -
Brassic it was your thread which inspired me actually. Can't believe you sold your horse- you're a brave lady. Excellent idea about the spreadsheet.
Thanks all for your opinions so far. Oh and climbgirl don't worry, I wouldn't be losing money on the pottery. These things tend to hold their value pretty well and I think I paid around £20 for each of them so I'd just be getting that money back :-)Debt at highest May 2006: £27,472.24

Yes sell them! Just keep thinking about that joyous day when all your debt has gone! Having sold your shoes will be the last thing on your mind. Luckily I'm not too sentimental about possessions, the only things that mean a lot to me are my photo's because they really can never be replaced.
Good luck

Not amount of money is worth sentimental value. You have decide how sentimental they are to you!
Or you could do what I did! Keep your posessions and sell your body!0 -
Hi Mrs Sparkle and Brassic,
I have been thinking about this since Brassic posted about her wedding dress this morning. I have never ebayed (sorry everyone, I know I should) and I have been thinking about what I could get rid of, I have lots of dresses, I have been to numerous weddings over the past 2 years (and bought new outfits for each and every one, sometimes two if I couldn't decide). They're all coast, monsoon, whistles etc and some even have hats and bags that match. I would hate to get rid of them but honestly, I am never going to wear them. Thanks guys you have spurred me into action, I mean if you can part with things of sentimental value then I can damn well get rid of those dresses!
(Although, I am going to pop over to the ebay boards as I believe that these will probably do better in spring/ summer? of course I'm not stalling.......)Saving for an early retirement!0
