Computer costs

  • My study (12ft x 6ft) is warmed only by the PC now the heating is off, the temperature of the air coming out of the power supply is 30degrees, the air temp is 22 where I'm sitting, and the hall is 16.

The processor uses about 94 watts (Intel's figure) so it's almot like having a 100 watt light bulb inside the PC, along with the graphics processor and memory, all using power and getting warm. The cooling of the inside of the PC is done by removing the heat with a fan, so the casing will be cool.

I used measurements instead of theory. Works every time...

On a related point - every few weeks when you've got the Hoover (or Dyson) out, pull out your PC and vacuum off the air intake grille on the back (It'll be the one that's all clogged up with dust/cat hair/ etc, etc )

The machine will run cooler and will have a longer life.

Hello, can anyone tell me how much electricity costs per hour to run my computer, thanks oap
About 5p/ hour, although it varies depending on load and what devices are inside the case.

I expect to reach such a high figure you have looked at the power supply rating and used that figure; which bears no relationship to the power it uses.

Its rather like claiming my Ferrari V12(I wish) uses its 500bhp all the time. In reality to cruise at 80mph it uses way less than 100bhp.

There have been a number of threads about this.

Even modern PC's, which consume more power than older PCs, rarely average more than 150 Watts. Older CRT monitors might be rated up to 70 Watts or so, with LCD screens considerably less.

Lots of us have measured the power our PCs consume and 130-140 Watts is about average.

Taking the cost of electricity as 10p/kWh it would be rare for any PC/monitor to cost more than 2p an hour to run.

Thank you everyone for your kind replies, so I will take it somewhere between two pence and five pence an hour then? I do not leave my computer on when not in use, but had a much larger electric bill, and just wondered what the computer was running away with. It must be my dryer which has been in use a lot during the wet weather, but thats another story, cheers and happy New Year to all, regards oap

Tumble driers are VERY expensive to run, try setting it on shorter run or lower temperature settings.

    You guessed wrong;)

To bring up the cost of running a tumble dryer in a thread about computer costs seemed strange.

I suggest that this confusion could have been avoided had you quoted the post(or part of the post) to which you were referring; it demonstrates perfectly the reason for that facility.

It is hardly reasonable to expect people to carefully read back through all the posts in a thread to see if they can work out why such a seemingly strange comment had been posted.
