But also consider that the heat the PC gives off also reduces the amount of work your central heating has to do so it isn't all wasted in the winter. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

An efficiently cooled computer will not have any effect on your central heating. It would be a worry if it had.

Where does all the heat from the computer go, if it doesn't heat up the room?
I have a room full of computers at work and it has to be air-conditioned to keep the temperature under control.0 -

I think the enquirer was asking about a single home computer and not a room full of computers. A modern domestic machine produces very little heat and certainly not enough to make any difference to the temperature in a room. Place your hand on your computer case and it should be cold.

I was probably being a bit pedantic, sorry! If a PC uses 250W of electricity it will produce 250W of heat - about a quarter of what a small electric fire produces. Feel the air blown out by the fan and it will be slightly warm.
As a previous poster said, the amount of electricity used is significant and its worth switching off if the heat is going to be wasted.0 -
My Pc uses 120 Watts as measured by one if the devices shown above. The PSU is rated at 300w but computers are built with a bit in hand in case more hardware is added so never really use the rated output. If I turn the Phillips 17" CRT monitor off the watts drop to 54W.. BTW I got my Meter from Lidl who stock them from time to time @ less than a fiver...As I live a fair distance from their store I subscribe to their and Aldi's email news letter .
Edit : which gives all the latest offers.

Yes, that's more like the power consumpion, and it is used in operating the PC with very little being turned into heat.

It all ends up as heat eventually. Think back to your physics lessons in school or see, for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_of_energy[0
