Seconding the Picturehouse - it was my cinema of choice when I was a student in York as it's far easier to get to than the big multiplex at Clifton Moor. They have a restaurant in there as well, which isn't the cheapest but would be nice for a special treat.
Actually, I've just had a thought - if you're OK with getting the bus, what about going up to Clifton Moor and going bowling? You'll need to get the number 6 bus (Purple Line) which departs from Rougier Street and a few other places in town and then stay on til Clifton Moor Tesco. Link:
