Two very different cars, although both large enough for the kids. Depends how old you want either car, too. The Passat has arguably the better and most versatile engine lineup in my opinion!

Had an older (53 plate) passat that i miss very much.

Boot was an akward entry shape but other than that it was an excellent vehicle and mechanically bombproof.

Work made me get shut (cash 4 cars) as they considered the mileage/age not to be suitable.
The replacement one i got was just not the same in terms of build quality, fuel consumption and generally niggly problems (front suspension started to fail at 15K miles).

The touran after that is even worse build quality wise and is about to get the heave ho.

The original freelander, everyone i know that has owned one has had nothing but issues with them and (if you believe these things) the ncap crash test on them was cr4p.

The new passat i don't like very much (it feels like VW cheaped out) and the freelander 2 i don't know enough about to give a fair comment on.

    Doubt it helps much :D

    Obviously opinions are just that.

Freelander is a good 4x4, Passat is a good 4dr saloon or estate.

It would also be worth taking in to account that Freelanders that had the K-Series Rover engine were somewhat unreliable (talking solely about the engine here!). From experience, I've had to work on numerous premature head gasket issues and water pump issues, some of which only lasted 10,000 miles!

I think if you fold the seats down in the Passat it might might be more comfortable for your wife to try for a baby, the Freelander might be ok if you like odd positions.

My suggestion would be to get a bed then a car.......... :)

Would a passat be capable of towing a small caravan?

Yes, more than capabale, although a diesel version would be advisable for its low-down torque.
