  • Royal Mail only actually deliver a quarter of all door to door mail, if they don't deliver it, TNT will or other companies, and they don't have an opt-out preference.

MPS won't work for the the type of junk the limits are being scrapped on because it is the unaddressed leaflets & mail which they deliver to every house in every street. However, for the addressed junk mail MPS really does work, I did it a couple of years ago and get almost no junk except off Companies who I deal with.

Like you say, the addressed junk mail is stopped by registering with MPS. Best thing I ever did over 5 years ago and any that slip through the net, if they have a pre-paid envelope, I send it back to them saying 'junk mail not required - please remove off of mailing list'. I don't know if it truely works but it makes me feel a whole lot better!!!!

I do something similar, I swap the junk mail across, and return some other company's 'offer' in THEIR envelope (after removing my details from the form) - Doesn't achieve much but gives me the satisfaction that **** bank offer of a loan gets a return letter (which they pay for) offer of double glazing ........etc,

In my view - if everyone returned every 'postage paid' envelope they received It would make the company re-think their marketing strategy before bombarding us with JUNK mail

Actually, This could be a challenge for us MSE'rs to show that we shouldn't have to 'opt out' (if this is really possible ...? ) THEY should 'Ask' before sending mail ! -

  • I am registered with MPS and have opted out of the Royal Mail system. You have to jump through hoops, you have to fill a form in, sign it etc. Also it states that you will get NO goverment leaflets delivered (especially during local & general elections).

Anyway one company, somehow, got my address (Royal Sun Alliance). Selling everything from Life to Car insurance. I got so fed up. I rang them up. I demanded to know, under the data protection act, where they got my details from, also stating that I was with MPS. They never answered my question. I again demanded to speak to a senior member of staff. He, again would not answer, where they got my details from. So I politely informed them, that if they sent me, one piece of paper, I would take legal advice, as this was boarding on harrassment and invasion of privacy.

Two years and counting. Not one piece of paper/letter has come from them.

But in general, I have joined both opting out of Royal Mail and MPS, and I generally now get a piece of mail once every 8 days, which is usually some kind of bill.

Now if there was only a system of opting out of receiving bills!!!!!!

We are the biggest cause of it. I get loads of rubbish through since starting on the freebies much much more than I used to, even recycling doesn't help as if we were not ordering it in the first place it would not get produced!!!
  • Sometimes I put unaddressed door-to-door envelopes in a post box, and address them to

Yes, I know the Royal Mail probably just bin them, but it makes me feel better.

Do you tick the boxes which opt out of receiving information and the like from the freebies you apply for? I do, and I'm registered with MPS.
The only junk I get is the local stuff (flyers and the like) And i'm in the process of getting that stopped.
