container for freezing soup

I was so inspired by the red lentil soup thread the other day that I actually made some over the weekend. Sadly my OH refused even a taste but on the plus side I have been bringing it to work with some bread but yesterday I couldnt even eat the bread as it was so filling! Anyway this morning I was looking around for a suitable receptacle to carry the soup to work as I had left yesterdays container in the office. I had an empty plastic pint carton of milk(the type with a handle and lid) so have used that and thought it would also be great for putting the soup in when it was still runny and freezing it. Have never frozen soup but I have frozen milk in these containers so now am going to scrounge some from the people at work as its very rarely that i ever buy just one pint.

  • Great idea!

I've also used margarine tubs or glass jars for storing soup in freezer. I guess you could even use a plastic bag, as long as it didn't have any holes in it!

Using food bags is a great idea - freeze in portion sizes - because you can use any freezable container to put the plastic bag into, tie the top and when the soup is frozen, remove the container, put the frozen soup in the bag back into the freezer and re-use your container to freeze even more soup. When you want to defrost a bag of soup just pop the bag into a container (I usually pop mine into the saucepan.)
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

  • I have been known to use a pint of milk container as an emergency hot water bottle, when camping! :D (I put it in a plastic bag for extra reassurance, but it was fine anyway......)

What about empty (and clean) large yoghurt cartons with lids? The Yeo Valley ones have a cardboard label that comes off for recycling and leaves the plastic container and lid.

Haven't tried it yet but have a couple in the cupboard ready!

I always freeze home made soup.

Can anyone direct me to the recipe for red lentil soup that Mrs. Baggins mentioned? Sounds yummy. Thanks...

I have started using the wide necked plastic "jars" that you can now get with fruit in for soups and stews etc. They seal really well, are square so stack neatly and the wide necks allow you to get chunky soups in easily.Netto sell these filled with 1kg of pears in syrup for about 59p, it is worth buying a couple, using the fruit and then recycling the jars. A jar will hold two "big" portions of soup etc. They are really strong and can be used over and over again.

The ones that you get takeaway chinese in are great! You can buy them in the pound shops, they are for freezer and microwave use, and hold one portion perfectly!

  • I also use the "take away" containers and find if I take out a portion of soup in the morning and carry it to work it's defrosted by lunchtime and ready for heating up.:T
