500mb is NOT a lot at all - 13mb a day - you will burn that without even trying - as you say its doing stuf in the background - this will use a fair chunk of that 13 mb each day - then add a couple of mins browsing every few hours - check facebook- you will soon hit 20mb in a day without even trying or downloading anything

Android app Quick Settings found via AppBrain or from the Android market .
Use this to control the data you want to use as well as turning off background sync .
Quick settings i use and have mobile data turned OFF unless i require it . Can also turn GPS off i am not lost so dont need it and it takes seconds to turn on . Likewise Bluetooth likewise WiFi .

I turn WiFi on and update what i need before leaving home if i am out and about and cannot get free WiFi then i turn on Mobile data . Result longer battery life and almost no chargeable data .
