Best way to remove shower curtain mould?

Don't know if this is the best board but worth a gamble.

Anyway got a plastic shower curtain that's a few months old but get this horrible black mould on it which is very hard to get rid of, anyone offer any suggestions?

And why do I get it? Someone told me it's because my bathroom doesn't have a window!? (Does have a extractor fan)

Cheers

I have mould too on occasions, I just buy a new curtain. Diluted bleach works but it sometimes turns the mould orange.

  • Thanks, but mine seems to get quite bad quite quickly so I would be buying a new curtain every few months!

This might sound crackers but we've found a way to help prevent the mould in the first place.

After using the shower (even with the bathroom window open and extractor fan working), we used to find the shower curtain would develop flecks of mould.

So, I got a length of string and tied a spring-type clothes peg onto one end of the string. The other end of the string is tied to the shower rail.

When you've finished having your shower, attach the bottom of the shower curtain to the peg and (if it is the correct length) it will hold the curtain off the side of the bath.......so that it can drain and air. If the wet/damp shower curtain is allowed to stick to the side of the bath, it won't dry properly.

It sounds crackers/daft but it really works. Try it and let us know if it works for you too.

Try vinegar and hot water sprayed on the curtain then left for a while before being rinsed off.

If you are willing to replace the plastic shower curtain with one of those nylon fabric ones you could put that in a hot wash with biological detergent and vinegar, and wash it regularly. Even have two - one for the wash one for the shower.

Or alternatively put up a screen (though you'd still get mould - but it's easier to get mould off a glass screen than a plastic curtain).

I have a similar bathroom with an extrator fan - what we have started doing that does seem to work is make sure the curtain is always pulled across the length of the bath tub (i.e not pulled to one side). This gives the water a chance to dry properly - once its dry of course you can pull it to one side.
We find that has greatly reduced the amount of mould on it.

But failing that - the sunday supplement sometimes have these special mould-resistent shower curtains for about £15-£20. In fact - here is one that B&Q do

I just buy them 1/2 price in Matalan sale. Not worth the effort of cleaning for £4.

I have tried the fabric ones but find after a couple of washes the protective mould repellent wears off.

I have 2 shower curtains, both on one set of hooks. The clear plastic one on the inside of the bath, and the other one hangs on the outside of the bath. The one on the outside stays nice and clean and looks ok. The one on the inside gets manky and then I stick it in the washing machine on a low temperature and hang it straight back up :)

  • i found that dettox mould and mildew remover shifted the black mould from everything in my bathroom. unfortunately i have pink mouldy type stuff on my shower curtain and it didnt get rid of that. be careful and wear something scruffy when you are using it though - i have to colour in the top i was wearing with permanent marker to hide the bleached bits i got when i used it last.
